Whoever the person is running that ROV
Is a fucking guru...

Just went around the side of the BOP and grabbed a hold of one of the steel uprights no prob. Just like he was standing there...

1. I was thinking along those lines last night while watching the ROV - It would
be difficult enough to do some of those actions if you were standing there and using your hands, what they're able to do with the ROV is amazing. And I was also thinking they must be exhausted.

Which feed are you watching?

4. Just like drone operators in Iraq/Afghanistan they work shifts.
To maximize the ROI on the ROV/drone you have multiple operators per vehicle.

Works an 8 hour shift, has 8 hours off, sleeps 8 hours, repeat.

7. Makes sense. Must be really stressful to do those "tasks" for 8 hours. nt

8. Yeah they might have an alternate work schedule for the top kill
due to sheer amount of work that needs to be done in short period of time.

It takes a special kind of person to be able to deal the "remoteness" of the work.

I mean you are completely limited by the equipment. Most people don't react well to that.

23. I think the "remoteness" and having to work with the robotic hands, as it were,
would be incredible frustrating. I'm one of those people who wouldn't react well!

And the level of intense concentration required must be exhaustive as well.

2. Yeah and likely gets paid a nice wage.
Don't want to half ass it on ROV pilot when you consider the potential costs if they screw up. In terms of both lost/damaged ROV and destruction of whatever they are working on.

25. That would be me :D
and I can tell you, after 4 hours of gaming you see everyone's performance drop seriously.
Especially given the lag between action of the operator & reaction of the ROV would be something to be very well adapted to. Me, I can't shoot straight with a lag of say more than 200 ms. For him, it's probably several seconds if not much.

Meaning he wouldn't be a First Person Shooter player, but best be more of a Flight Simulator fan...

18. Shouldn't the National Guard be doing this...
...or some guy from Woods Hole?

I mean, whoever it is works for BP, or a BP subcontractor, and can't be trusted.

They might just make it worse. Because more losses, in oil and money both, and more bad PR, will just make BP stronger.

Oh, wait a minute....

24. That guy running the ROV just wants the spill to continue so BP can siphon more oil.

Here is just pretending to be real competent and care about his job to throw you off your game.
