Fucking hell.
Edited on Wed May-26-10 03:50 PM by LeftyFingerPop
CNN showing video now of a location 850 feet deep where the oil is a thick sludge. Dead eels. Disoriented fish. Scientists on surface have to wear gas masks.

4. To the best of my understanding, what we have seen on the coast and surface is the least of it.

5. I'm thinking that the poster probably meant that scientists on the surface have to wear gas masks.
And perhaps you thought that also.

10. Yes. A gas mask at 850 feet would be odd, and inappropriate.
However, it is horrifying that a human MUST wear a gas mask close to or in the oil slick. I believe the actual levels of toxicity are being withheld and marginalized. Essentially there is a cloud of death permeating the Gulf. Anything living that comes in contact with the steadily increasing cloud will die.

16. Toxicity
I believe I read that the toxicity of the dispersant they are using is about 4 times more toxic than the oil itself. Of course dilution helps and you get a lot of dilution in an ocean.

18. They're respirators,
and CNN reporters had to wear them, along with Hazmat suits, because the air quality is so poor.

The locals who are working for BP are now complaining of symptoms of hypoxia. The hydrocarbons in the air are going to cause major, permanent lung damage. No one should be out there without Hazmat gear.

A lot more people are going to die before this is over, and it doesn't have to be that way.

19. They were in a boat in an area where the water is 850ft deep.
They were on the surface, not 850ft deep. They needed respirators because of the dangerous levels of hydrocarbons in the air.
