A blessing and a curse

We (liberals) care too much.

Millions of gallons leaking in the gulf, conservatives shrug their shoulders and say "the ocean will clean itself, relax."

But we liberals are emotionally devastated by it.

Millions of people lose their jobs because of an economic collapse caused (mostly) by Wall Street, conservative shrug their shoulders and say "tough luck. Those are the breaks."

But we liberals feel the anguish of those families and try to help.

Innocent people are killed as "collateral damage" in two wars and conservatives shrug their shoulders and say, "who cares? They're brown people who don't believe in Jesus."

But we liberals are anguished by the killing in our name.

We have empathy. The pain and suffering of other people matter to us. We can never be fully satisfied, because we know there are still people hurting out there and injustices being done, and we won't rest until it stops.

It's our blessing and our curse.

But conservatives lack the ability to feel the pain that others are feeling. If their lives are ok, then they are happy - to hell with the rest of the world. This is THEIR blessing and curse as well.

For when misfortune finally DOES befall them (and it hits everyone at some point in their lives), conservatives have nobody to turn to. So they get angry.... and they turn even uglier toward everyone else.

All things being equal... I'd rather be us. I'd rather feel everyone's pain (and joy!) then to be trapped in a world where the only thing that mattered to me was.... me.
