20. Sorry, you're obviously "an idiot" if you don't "get it."
It would be amusing if any of these PETA-haters actually visited one of PETA's offices, where the female-to-male ratio is rarely less than 2:1, and usually around 4:1.

But facts often get in the way of a good screed, so I'm not holding my breath. :D

It's a real shame someone tricked those poor, stupid women into volunteering for this campaign.

They're obviously not smart enough to have made the decision on their own.

19. My point is that I am not a "black and white" thinker...
I don't write off someone or an org because one or a few things annoy me. But with PETA, it seems the only thing they understand how to use is objectification of women. They have become, pardon my use of an animal, a one trick pony.

24. A glance at PETA's current campaigns disproves that.
PETA appears to be involved in a wide variety of campaigns, many (perhaps most, but I'm not fussed enough to crunch the numbers) of which appear to avoid the use of naked or semi-clad models.

Granted, the "Rather Go Naked" campaign focuses on people/models choosing to go naked rather than to wear fur--as is the case in the current UK protest--but that's merely one of their many campaigns, and many of the other campaigns are so well-clothed that Auntie Puritan would approve.

http://www.peta.org/mc/index.asp

So hate PETA all you want, but let's not make stuff up, eh? :)

11. PETA's Anti-Fishing Protest
Some of PETA's South Florida membership were busily protesting commercial and sport fishing in South Florida. It looks like BP's Gulf Coast fish-kill oil spill did more to clobber both forms of fishing than PETA's protests did.

i would never make a comment like that to a vegetarian or an org that protects animals. crass. and disrespectful. but it goes both ways for me.

these are a few comments from men with the package meat campaign

http://sherryleeshort.wordpress.com/2009/10/10/peta-poo/

Male comments on the photo included:

I’d eat that.

ill take two of those… im hungry for a douible girl burger.

Man, what a ripoff. If I’m going to pay like 7 bucks a pound for my human meat,
it’d better at least be cleaned first.

You forgot to cut the head off.

She looks yummy, maybe a teriyaki marinade…

at the expense of women. how is this any better than

"Unga bunga, me like bacon...gonna have steak...Hitler was a vegetarian"

Not just using T&A to sell beer.

But it's amazing that the word "beer" doesn't receive the same knee-jerk response around here that the word "PETA" does. Gosh, I wonder why that is.

50. 'Cause people like beer?
Let's face it, beer doesn't get in your face and make value judgements about your diet.

Beer doesn't bitch at you if your shoes are made of the 'wrong' kind of material.

And beer is happy to show you pictures of near naked women just like PETA is.

Why wouldn't beer get a better reception than PETA?

and while (keeping in mind I haven't seen it yet) I would probably not like that campaign either... it has also not been the general track record of Code Pink, whereas I see frequent use of that tactic by PETA. As I said up-thread, I don't write anyone off for annoying or offending me once, but when it is a typical tactic, I do.

41. The funny thing is, that argument is itself sexist and paternalistic.
Instead of accepting that grown women can make an informed decision to use their bodies to get media attention at almost zero cost (and do for many different kinds of activism, ranging from pro-breastfeeding "nurse-ins" to the topless, body-painted anti-sweatshop protest I saw outside a Gap once) the assumption is that these grown, presumably capable women are being exploited. It's paternalistic bullshit, and really at it's core it's anti-woman, because it assumes any women who engages in activism the critic does not approve of is incapable of making an informed decision and is being victimized.
