The DADT repeal is a Big F***ing Deal

Congratulations to our LGBT friends.... It's a step. Marriage equality is next.

It is a step, indeed, but we have so very far to go...

5. I did, and edited it almost immediately afterward.
But not quickly enough, apparently. :)

11. ENDA wasn't supposed to be next, it was supposed to come before
but it has been delayed repeatedly in the House, presumably because there were problems getting enough votes, and even if it passes there--and it seems likely it will, at this point--it won't pass the Senate.

A DOMA repeal, to put it bluntly, hasn't a chance in hell. I figure that, in the absence of a Supreme Court decision invalidating it (which is reasonably possible, there are solid legal challenges), we'll be waiting another decade or so: this is the largest Democratic Congressional majority in how long?

This is why this is bittersweet for me. They did/will do this--a change that has been obviously right for a long time, that has been in the political mainstream since at least 1992--just barely, they did it in a package loaded with compromises (implementation isn't actually going to happen until next February at the earliest, it's looking like), and it's probably the most significant gay rights legislation that will pass this session. The only other thing we might get is equal federal benefits for federal workers in same-sex relationships, which is good too but still so very insufficient.

*sigh*

14. Yeah it is a bit depressing
My big concern with the DADT repeal is two fold. One it does not contain a non-descrimination portion for GLBT (the T being a big one) and two, I worry that if the joint chiefs of staff decide not to go along with it that Obama wont force them to do it (something as their boss he should do IMO).

10. What always strikes me about ...
... the present fight for LGBT rights and equality is the fact that someday, many of us will tell our grandchildren that these rights actually had to be fought for.

"Grandma's hallucinating again. She's babbling about a time when same-sex couples weren't permitted to marry in this country."

Complete equality is inevitable. Attempting to slow down the process is tantrum-throwing of the worst (and most futile) order.
