Graduation Night
My daughter graduated from high school tonight, second in her class of nearly 700, with a 5.00 GPA. She has a full boat scholarship to U New Mexico to study biochemical engineering. It wasn't an easy road. Her mom ran off with a fireman when she was four and her brother and sister (twins) were three. She was so happy, and I was happy for her, but it hit me hard afterwards that she was gone now. The love you feel for your kids is so different than the love of a spouse or lover. I always felt that it was blood, unlike a spouse, and that it was something I could never have taken away. Now she's going away. Bittersweet.
Happy graduation to all tonight, make this world a better place, and don't forget to write home once in a while.

1. I went to my SO's son's graduation in Denver last week....

It was a big deal, commandeering one of the major theaters in town. Took me three days to drive there. I never thought a high school graduation could be so cool. Mind you, I'm a university prof, so I attend commencement ceremonies every spring. It's not like Pomp and Circumstance is anything new. But that HS graduation was really something. Those kids, and their families, kept it real. I was impressed.

Congratulations to your daughter!

2. Congrats to both of you.
Second in 700, she must have worked really hard.

3. Thank you
Her sister is a photography freak-she took the pics. Two more next year. I won't know what to do when they're all gone.

9. Don't worry, panader0, nature hates a vacuum.
I've decided that kids are like tides, they go out and they come back only not in the same way twice. When my youngest left, all kinds of things I'd put off presented themselves. But, it is a loss, for sure.

8. Congratulations to your daughter, and to you for all the hard work to get her there.
Yes, she will be going away, but not for good. Every parent feels sad about the time when their kids go out into the big world.

Who knows--maybe yours will go on to find ways to prevent the disaster we are now experiencing. Or find better ways to cope with crises such as these. Whatever she does, she'll make a wonderful difference in the world.

Go out there and take on the world, kids! This is a special time in your life. But oh, yeah: before you do, party!

10. Remember, your kids never really leave you if you maintain a
good relationship with them. I am 34 and still call my Mom at least 4 times a week. She is my closest friend and I love sharing my granddaughters with her.

11. Congratulations to you both!
May you enjoy having your grocery budget stretch just a little further!

(Hey, that was the most comforting thing I could think of!)
