White House threatens veto over F-35 alt-engine

By William Matthews - Staff writer
Posted : Thursday May 27, 2010 18:11:24 EDT

As promised, the White House has threatened to veto the 2011 defense budget if Congress includes money for an alternate Joint Strike Fighter engine.

In a “statement of administration policy” issued Thursday, the Executive Office of the President said the Obama administration “strongly objects to the addition of $485 million for the extra engine program.”

White House officials warned that if the final version of the defense spending bill includes that money, “the president’s senior advisors would recommend a veto.”

~snip~

The engine, which is being developed by GE and Rolls-Royce, has already cost the Pentagon about $2 billion, and the White House says the engine will cost $2.4 billion more.

Gates said the engine is unaffordable and that the current F-35 JSF engine built by Pratt & Whitney is performing well.
