An evening with Helen Thomas
Edited on Fri May-28-10 08:21 AM by DFW
As many on DU already know, Helen Thomas has been a family friend of ours for over 40 years. My father was
a respected member of the Washington print press, and a colleague of Helen's. Both were past presidents of
the Gridiron Club. Although I am now mostly posted in Europe, I still get together with Helen when I am in
Washington, which includes now. We meet either at her home in NW or at one of her favorite restaurants Last
night, it was again at Mama Ayesha's on Calvert Street, off of Connecticut Avenue. Mama Ayesha's is a fabulous
little Lebanese Restaurant with outstanding food. Helen is of Christian Lebanese descent, and is sort of a
special guest there. She is VERY well taken care of, as are her guests.

Last night I had Shish Taouk, which is sort of a shish kabob with marinated chicken instead of lamb, which I
am not supposed to eat (cholesterol issues). Helen had some sort of ground beef wrapped in oversized endives.
The appetizers of garlic and lemon hummus and eggplant purée would have done just fine, they were that good.

Helen will be 90 years old this August, but she is still sharp as a tack, and a full time working journalist.
Although her opinions on many subjects are not difficult to figure out, as she is still working as a journalist,
I will not be posting what was discussed, no matter how predictable it might be (and it was!). However, there were
two things I liked so much, I asked to be able to share them here on DU, and got specific permission to do so.

First: Al Neuwirth of USA Today was down in Cuba several years ago interviewing Fidel Castro. He asked Castro what
he thought were some of the fundamental differences in our two governments. Castro said that for one thing, HE didn't
have to answer questions from Helen Thomas (!!!!!). Apparently even Castro had watched decades of press conferences
where Helen had been making our presidents squirm with unease.

Second, a great line. Helen said (as have many on DU) that it is time for Obama to realize that despite his extending
the had of cooperation to the Republicans, it is clear that they have no intention of ever offering the least bit of
cooperation. None. Their blatant tactic is to obstruct, obstruct, obstruct, until the elections come around,, and then
get on Obama's case for not doing anything. Helen said Obama cannot take the 5th amendment anymore--he cannot refuse
to answer. On the contrary, he MUST answer, clearly, quickly, and forcefully. He extended his hand. They bit it off.
It is time to realize this and move on. Time is running out. No more "5th amendment." He cannot refuse to answer
them. Call them on their BS--clearly and frequently. Helen makes no bones about her status. She can speak out if
she wants to (see her recent press conference, plus recent and upcoming column) because at age 90, what does she
have to fear at this point? (hint: not a whole hell of a lot)

We talked for 3 hours, so you can imagine how much more there was, although some of it was family stuff that has no
place here. In 40 years, there have been people lost, children born, things to reminisce over, catch up on. Incidents
with other presidents (starting with JFK!) and so on are also of great interest to me anyway. But most of what we talk
about is the current state of affairs.

I have posted this before, but will again for anyone who missed it: if anyone from DU is in DC and happens to try out
Mama Ayesha's (1967 Calvert Street NW) and sees Helen, don't be shy about coming up to say hi and talk. She is not
some standoffish icon. She is a warm people person, and the reason she is so tough on all presidents is because she
actually GIVES A DAMN.

I hope she lives to be 150.

10. Loved the ... "and don't give us the Bushism" ... wonderful -- !!!
Keep after them, Helen!!

PS: Sarah McClendon was another favorite of mine and it would be wonderful

if some of the other journalists would begin acting as these women did to

truly bring forth truth -- to challenge our politicians -- and corporations.

3. You are so right!
And thanks for the sentiment. Besides my wife and daughters, I have the good fortune to have the
friendship of three very remarkable 80-something women who serve to remind me that age is just a
number, not a barrier. Helen is one of them until August 4th. She then becomes a 90-something!

7. She is the last of an era.
Everyone else thinks Wolf Blitzer is a journalist. The biggest political yawn on television.

6. Lebanese food is great anyway
But Mama Ayesha's is really top tier. If you're ever in DC, definitely try it out!

11. Helen very rarely expresses any personal pride in anything outside of family
But that one, she told with great relish. She is obviously proud of Castro's comment! As well she should be.

9. A working journalist, and a REAL one, at nearly 90!
She really is an example to all people, not just as a journalist, but as an example of how valuable our older citizens are, how much they know and have to share with us from first-hand knowledge, especially someone like Helen, who has had a front seat to the history of this country for so many decades.

Lol, I wonder would Castro be willing to do an interview with Helen?

What I notice every time she asks a question that we would all want to ask if we could (thank you Helen for that) none of her colleagues follow up.

At least she is not in the back of the room anymore. And I always thought it was a disgrace that her colleagues did not refuse to cover Bush's press conferences until she was put back in the front, a place she had earned over the years.

I always remember the Canadian Press, after their PM began acting like Bush giving orders to them as to what they could ask him, boycotting his next Press Conference. So, whoever advised him from the Bush Administration had clearly forgotten what a real free press looks like. Those 'new rules' didn't get anywhere in Canada. Here apparently it was easy.

Thanks for the report of your meeting with Helen. As always she is right about the Republicans needing to be shoved aside so we can get on with business and about them being called out for being obstructionists.

Unless they are just playing their role as part of the Empire of course, giving cover to the WH NOT to push for real change. Someday we'll know for sure.

12. I think Castro would do what most presidents do when she grills them
I.e. get wordy and change the subject and hope she doesn't notice, except that she lasers in and always notices.

Helen makes no bones about her age. As recently as a year ago, my brother and I used to walk her home from Mama
Ayesha's. The last two times, her legs just couldn't handle it any more (it's not next door). But everyone at that
restaurant loves her and one of the staff will always take a little time off and drive her home.

Don't look for her to retire any time soon, either. In 40 years or so maybe.......

14. Lol, but it would be a fun interview to watch ~
Very nice to know people are looking out for her. And if and when she retires, it will be a sad day for us. I hope some of her colleagues will look back at the times they did not support her and realize the harm they did to this country during a time when the only defense against the worst administration in our lifetimes, should have been a free press doing what Helen was left to do, mostly alone.

15. If she does live to be 150, I bet every president hopes she would retire
long before! She's the best. I trust her. Not too many can you say that about these days.

I'm so pleased for you that you have such a wonderful friendship. And so pleased for Helen that she has such wonderful friends in you and your family. :hi:

16. My family has known her for a long, long time
But she has a LOT of friends. Even in the restaurant, people come up to say hi to her all the time. Some are
strangers who just want to say hi, but many are people she has known for decades, like us. My brother and I
saw her irregularly when our dad was alive, but after he passed, we sort of took over the reins. After all,
at age 90, she doesn't have as many contemporaries left as she did at age 50. I think all three of us treasure
our friendship. It speaks volumes of Helen that, with all the history she has seen first hand, the things she
is most interested in talking about (other than personal stuff) are the present.

17. Bless her dear heart.
I've admired her tenacity for more than 40 years. A few years ago I told her in an e-mail that I wish she could be cloned. She responded thanking me for the compliment. I was thrilled that she would actually take the time to respond. She is just that gracious.

Thank you for your posts, DFW. Helen is a national treasure.

21. Helen usually responds to email if she isn't swamped
She doesn't have the big ego of many media "stars." Helen is from an era when journalists just
reported and commented, and didn't make the news themselves. Many people have been pleasantly
surprised to get a reply from her, signed by her simple trademark, "HelenT." But she doesn't
have a battery of secretaries or assistants insulating her from the public as if she were Madonna.
She wouldn't want it and she has no use for it.

19. My dear DFW!
You know, I was looking for a different thread when I spotted yours...

I knew immediately that I would suspend my search, and see what you had to say tonight! Your threads are always worthwhile...

Thank you for this splendid report. The food and the company sound just perfect. How often do we get such a combination? Not nearly often enough...

May she live to be 150, indeed!

20. Thanks, and my pleasure, Peggy!
Your kind sentiments are not universally shared, and my occasional posts always garner unrecs, but
the real world out there more than compensates, as do replies like yours. The company was indeed
outstanding, as was the food. I leave back for Germany tonight, but will be back here in two months
or so, hopefully for Helen's 90th birthday!

I know how Helen is respected by so many on DU. It's always a pleasure to share a few things
with those here who revere her integrity, but don't get the chance to tell her so in person.
