How much of the oil from the Gulf or Alaska is actually used here in America. I recall seeing figures showing how much of the Alaskan oil is exported but have not seen same for the Gulf resources.

9. Does it really make a difference
We exist in a global market, so global supply and global demand is what is important. If we could produce more than we needed, we could ban exports among a certain amount, and get away from the global demand driving prices up, but as long as we import oil, then we can not control supply and demand.

Who really cares if we export the oil to South America or anywhere else. If that makes more sense for logistical reasons, and we import some oil, then it doesn't really change anything.

But to answer your question there are different ways to grade oil: Sweet vs sour, and light vs heavy, so we can have heavy sweet, light sweet, heavy sour, and light sour. So its not always as simple as just sending it to wherever you want to send it.

3. Looks like it's about ~1.8 million barrels PER DAY. That's enough

oil to power the U.S. for one month that's leaving the country. And from my understanding of the situation, it's not actually exported as oil but as refined products like gasoline. And I happen to know that alot of it goest to Japan.

5. So even though it goes to the nearest refinery
it still may end up exported?

8. My understanding is
that not all crude is the same. Some refineries only accept certain types.I guess it depends on what the end product will be,whether plastics, gas, diesel, kerosene, etc.

7. In Q1 of 2010 the US exported about 180 million barrels and imported about 1020 million barrels
US crude oil and products exports by destination:
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_expc_a_EP00_EEX_mbbl_m.htm

Total exports were 180,064,000 barrels in the first quater of 2010, of which only about 4 million barrels were crude oil. The rest were mostly refined products like gasoline and fuel oil.
See http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_exp_dc_NUS-Z00_mbbl_m.htm

US oil imports by country of origin:
http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_ep00_im0_mbbl_m.htm

Total imports were 1,019,666,000 barrels in the first quarter of 2010, of which 793 million barrels were crude oil.
See http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_epc0_im0_mbbl_m.htm

Note that 793 million barrels at $75 / barrel would be an outflow of US dollars of $59 billion for the quarter. For the year we may spend about $250 billion for foreign oil.
