Poll: Rand Paul lead collapses
Thursday, May 27, 2010 18:02 ET

According to a new Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll, Rand Paul's support in Kentucky has plummeted to below 50%. Which means we may owe an apology to the state of Kentucky!

When the controversy over Rand Paul's non-support of the Civil Rights Act blew up, we posted this famous video of Kentucky Democrats having an important and serious discussion of national politics, and sometimes using the "N-word." It turns out that these people are perhaps outliers.

Paul's only ahead Democratic challenger Jack Conway 44-40%. (And the last poll, showing Paul up 59-34, was a Rasmussen poll, so who actually knows how big his lead actually was?)

Paul's negatives are up among Democrats and independents. But Republicans like him just a little bit more!

It was also reported today that Rand Paul is, for some reason, not actually a board-certified ophthalmologist. You don't need certification to practice, but 95% of practicing ophthalmologists are certified.

Rand Paul's Upstart Ophthalmology Group Leaves Little Mark

Rand Paul's reputation for marching to his own drummer may extend to his medical career. The GOP Senate candidate is the founder and president of a certifying board for eye doctors, which he appears to have set up as a rival to the existing certification board. But his organization has left little public record, and the legitimacy with which it's viewed remains unclear at best.

In 1999, Paul created a new non-profit organization, the National Board of Ophthalmology (NBO), headquartered at his home in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in order to "provide information to the public concerning physicians with exemplary qualifications in the medical specialty of ophthalmology," according to the organization's founding document, filed online with the Kentucky Secretary of State's office. Page One, a Kentucky politics blog, first noted the group's existence last month.

"It was a certifying board," Beth Ann Slembarski, the administrator of the major existing ophthalmology certifying board, the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), told TPMmuckraker.

Annual filings for NBO list Paul -- a Tea Party favorite, who days after an upset win in the GOP primary for Kentucky's U.S. Senate race ignited a firestorm last week by criticizing a key provision of the Civil Rights Act -- as the group's "owner and president." Paul's wife, Kelley Paul, is listed as its vice president, and his father-in-law, Hilton Ashby, is listed as its secretary. But it's not clear how involved Kelley Paul or Ashby have been. Reached at his home in Russellville, Kentucky, Ashby told TPMmuckraker: "I can't tell you what the organization does." Informed that he was listed as the group's secretary, Ashby said: "I was at one time involved as a secretary on something. But I don't know whether it was about that specifically or not."

8. New fertile ground for questioning Rand Paul
- do you think nuclear power plant operators should be certified?
- do you think airline maintenance inspectors should be certified?
- do you think infant medical devices should be certified?

4. No surprise. Libertarian types traditionally oppose government oversight
of licensed professions. They believe that anyone at all should be able to hang out a shingle and proclaim themselves a "doctor", and the free market will sort things out.

6. The Libertarian Party is thinking of
running a candidate against him, saying his ideas are not "libertarian", which they aren't. So, I suspect that will definitely help Conway - split the R vote.

10. Rand Paul's Polling Tailspin

It would be silly to write him off, and I still think he's the favorite in the race, but the week since he won the GOP primary has been a terrible one for Rand Paul, and now we have poll numbers to back that up. A new http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/5/27/870524/-KY-Sen:-A-real-race-in-red-territory">Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll has Paul running neck and neck with Democratic attorney general Jack Conway, leading him 44-40. That's a far cry from the 59-34 lead that a recent Rasmussen survey showed. Of course, Paul may never really have had a 25-point lead. Jon Chait explains the problem with Rasmussen polls. In any event, seems safe to conclude that a fair number of Kentuckians support the Civil Rights Act...

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2010/05/rand-pauls-polling-tailspin/57366/

Paul is actually ahead in this poll by 44-41, not 44-40. Hit the first hyperlink above to see that this is so. Either way, results are within the poll's 4% MOE. Details of the Daily Kos/Research 2000 poll are available here. Paul was ahead of Conway by 1% in a May 5 Public Policy Polling survey.

As some here have previously noted, Rasmussen seems to be more interested in shaping opinions than he is in reflecting them.

11. Ha ha, poor Rand. I think it's safe to say when he ventures out again
with the press he will need to explain his unusual "certification board" he set up. I can't wait to hear about it, lol.

Thanks for posting.

12. His implosion...
His implosion will be a lesson for the next guy who sounds like a racist, acts like a racist, speaks like a racist, and supports racism-- but isn't *really* as racist.

15. This is exactly why we need more and more teabagger candidates
to win GOP primaries. Put their lunacy out there for everyone to see.
