Found interesting Bible verses re: offshore oil drilling...
I'm not one of those people who takes the Bible literally but I love reading about weird omens and prophecies.

One prophecy I'm familiar with is the one about Leviathan, a large destructive monster from the sea.

Job 41 talks of the "sea monster" leviathan: "He makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment." Job 41:31

"O LORD...the earth is full of thy riches. So is this great and wide sea...there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein." Psalms 104

Maybe there really is omen telling us to stop oil drilling in the sea.

1. It doesn't matter, because the Mayans tell us that the world will end in 2012
That's about 2.6 years to go, so the blowout in the gulf doesn't matter.

(Unless it is the reason that the world ends, in which case there is nothing we can do about it anyway. We're predestined to doom.)

11. 2012 marks the beginning of the end in 2036.
At least for Zoroastrians. Our Apocalypse is right on track. Zoroastrianism is nearing extinction and we're just waiting for the Comet to hit. Apophis should do that on it's return trip in 2036. Then Ahura Mazda will reorder the universe and there shall be a new beginning for the survivors.

22. Actually, Zoroastrianism, mixed with Semitic paganism
formed Judaism. So a form of Zoroastrianism is very much alive and well.

15. The Mayans do NOT say the world will end in 2012.
They say 2012 ends their long-count calendar and that we enter an age of enlightenment.

The world will be fine.

21. No it marks the 5th destruction of the world.
I think it happens every 52,000 years or something like that. Yes this does coincide with the age of aquarius where knowledge will flow like water. But the Mayan concept of destruction of the world. Does not include the extinction of mankind or all life. There are always survivors.

2. read the Hopi Prophecy
according to this prophecy we are at stage #7 when the oceans run black. Stage #8 is the final stage.

http://www.doomsdayprophecy.info/articles/74693/2012-Hopi-Prophecies

>>The Hopi prophecies don't make predictions for a specific year, such as 2012. Instead they merely describe events to take place at the end of the world -- or more accurately, at the end of the present age, when a savior figure will arrive to chastise and redeem the earth's inhabitants. There is one Hopi prophecy that came to light decades ago and which is startling, given recent events. It says that in the end times, the world's seas will turn black.

As I write this, the media are reporting that the oil spill from the rig accident in the Gulf of Mexico is many times worse than first feared. Ominously, the plumes of oil are about to reach the Gulf Stream, which could carry the stuff into the Atlantic to wash up everywhere from the beaches of North Carolina and New Jersey to the shores of Ireland and Cornwall -- and beyond.

17. Interesting
Many of the predictions for the year 2012 paint a dire picture of the death of our oceans, an event the prognosticators say could occur by then, if not before. The poisoning of our seas and the loss of the life within them would be an environmental catastrophe such as the world has never seen.

The strange Hopi prophecy of black oceans fits this 2012 doomsday scenario perfectly. A massive, unstoppable oil link could easily lead to the death of the sea in just one or two years. This is one prophecy that may be coming true right before our eyes.

19. I should add ...
Edited on Fri May-28-10 04:47 PM by CountAllVotes
there are other interpretations of this Prophecy. From my understanding, the Elders of the Hopi tribe went into the caves to dwell for the rest of their lives in anticipation of their Prophecy around the year 1990 or so best I can recall. So, ... but don't ignore IMO.

3. Any prophecy vague enough can be applied to almost any situation
Which is why biblical verses and Nostradamus quotes keep coming up.

4. That's kinda funny, as those verses are often used by fundies
to argue the "young earth" myth and as "proof" that mankind live with dinosaurs (with the leviathan being a Plesiosaur).

8. Red tide is another phenomenon used by fundies to draw ties to "end times"
Every time there's a red tide event it's always fund to go read the fundie web sites and watch them get all a-flutter that THIS IS IT!!

7. Revelations 8. Second trumpet
The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

1 When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.
2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.

3 Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar before the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of the saints, went up before God from the angel's hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.

The Trumpets
6 Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.
7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down upon the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: "Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!"

10. Rev. 8:11
http://bible.cc/revelation/8-11.htm

And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

What star, you say? Take a look at BP's logo... another factoid on this verse is that the Ukrainian for "wormwood" is... wait for it... chernobyl.

12. It would be very interesting if the ancient name for the meteor Apophis was wormwood.
Astrologically a lot has changed over the millenniums.

16. The bible tells us how to stop the gusher, in Kings...
2 Kings 4:6

When all the jars were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another one." But he replied, "There is not a jar left." Then the oil stopped flowing.

Voila. We need only fill all the jars.

Sid
