Massey Operations Honored with Prestigious Safety Awards

JULIAN, W.Va., May 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Massey Energy Company (NYSE: MEE) today announced that nine of its operations have been honored for their exemplary commitment to safety excellence based on their outstanding safety records during 2009.

The Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association presented awards to:

Alex Energy - No. 1 Mine, North Surface Mine
Aracoma Coal Company - Hernshaw Mine
Black Castle Surface Mine
Homer III (Inman) Processing Plant

The Holmes Safety Association, a non-profit organization founded in 1918, annually recognizes outstanding safety performance in the mining industry. The association's members include representatives from state and federal government agencies, mining organizations and labor unions.

In addition to earning the Holmes Safety Association's awards, five of its operations earned the
prestigious MSHA District 4 Pacesetter Award for safety:

Elk Run Coal Company - Chess Processing
Elk Run Coal Company - Roundbottom Mine
Marfork Coal Company - Allen Powellton Mine
Road Fork Development - # 51 Mine, Guyandotte
Spartan Mining Company - Delbarton Plant

All of the awards were presented at the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association's annual meeting in Roanoke, West Virginia on May 21-22.

"We congratulate all the members at these Massey operations on being recognized for their commitment to working safely," said Don Blankenship, Massey's Chairman and CEO. "All of these awards are well deserved recognition of how our members are committed to working safely and that Massey's safety culture is effective throughout the organization."

Massey Energy Company, headquartered in Richmond, Va., with operations in West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia, is the fourth largest coal company in the United States based on produced coal revenue and is included in the S&P 500 Index.

Bush didn't call him "Turd Blossom" for nothing. These guys learned the lesson well.

But really not much different from the Grammy's, Academy Awards, etc. "Let's give ourselves some awards"
