Barbour: Weathered oil is not dangerous

By KAREN NELSON - klnelson@sunherald.com

BILOXI — Gov. Haley Barbour, in a news conference Thursday, said the brown-orange mousse that has been washing ashore in Louisiana is not dangerous.

He described it as weathered oil with most of its toxic components churned out by the Gulf before it reaches shore. He said the danger was it could smother an area, as opposed to being poisonous.

However, he said there has been a darker oil spotted off Louisiana recently that concerned him.

Yea Haley, its actually healthy for you. Why don't you go jump in and show us?

1. Haley is dumber than a post
And they were talking about him as a Presidential prospect in 2012?

3. Time for a dunking booth filled with "weathered oil"...
...with Barbour the dunkee.

Proceeds to go to Gulf fishermen and others whose living depends on a healthy Gulf.

7. Animals along the shore like to cavort in weathered oil
Plant life grows like crazy in weathered oil - I mean, who doesn't fertilize their garden with the stuff?

Plus, tourists will visit the gulf to marvel at the pretty patterns it makes in the water.

9. Well a plain tarball won't hurt you, however....
a tarball dipped in toxic dispersant is another issue altogether.

Not to mention underwater plumes of oil that haven't been weathered yet. If underwater plumes are a major concern for Lake Ponchartrain, you can bet that they will make an appearance on the Mississippi beaches.

In other words, Barbour is a frontrunner for Moron of the Year.

17. By the time it is weathered to a tar ball, it is basically the same as asphalt on your streets
Where do you think that asphalt comes from?

11. I've been hearing this on cable news
It really sounds like one of the major plans to clean the environment of the oil is evaporation. :grr: This, the best I can tell, is their explanation on why they are using so much chemical dispersant. :grr: :grr:

In the years to come when the wetlands die, many species go extinct, and the GoM practically dies, corporatists will say that it had nothing to do with the oil.

13. I hate it when articles paraphrase controversial remarks. What *exactly* did he say?
I watched the whole video clip, and I didn't hear him claim the mousse was "not dangerous". Maybe there was something after the clip...

He did make one bullshit statement though, when he said that the moratorium should not apply to shallow water drilling. He said there was nothing about the current incident that wouldn't lead to the conclusion that it was because of the great depth and high pressures. He pulled that out of his ass.

that HE's not dangerous. I think that Barbour thinks that "ole" and oil are synonymous.

24. Wow talk about delusional:
"Barbour allayed concerns the approaching hurricane season would make this oil crisis worse and invited people to come to Mississippi beaches for the Memorial Day weekend."

How exactly can he "allay" concerns about the approaching hurricane season?

Is he gonna fart in their general direction??
