Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill: 35 Days From Space
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thKLPSkEId0

NASA has compiled a 35-day timelapse series of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The images are from its Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flies aboard the Aqua and Terra satellites. Both satellites are part of the international Earth Observing System and both orbit the globe from pole to pole, observing most of the planet every day. These images are of oil at the surface only.

1. The final image from the MODIS is sobering....

to put it mildly.

Looks like at least a third of the entire GOM is thick with leaked crude now.

2. The more I see of this
the more upset I get.

There was a video going around last week that was sent to me by my Republican cousin that suggested all we needed to do about this was dump hay on it. He figured we had plenty of hay since it covers so much of the central plains. Of course there were no suggestions offered as to how to get that much hay to the Gulf or what to do about the damage the oil was doing beneath the surface, or how to get it out of the wetlands. Just dump hay on it.

So just drill baby drill and if there's a problem, soak it up with hay and keep drilling.

4. "Why do we waste money on NASA?"
Clearly, that money could be spent solving problems down here instead of frittering it away on useless things like space.

:sarcasm:

5. I'm surprised BP let NASA photograph this...
don't they own space, too?

7. BP didn't have a space shuttle available to shove the MODIS out of the way during that time. n/t
