5. I think the media wants Obama to be like Bill Clinton.
I loved Bubba at times but a lot of his empathy was pure theater. Obama is himself, he need not be anyone else.

Satire: What Will CNN's Mr. Wizard, Rick Sanchez, Discover Next About Science?
By NB Staff (Bio | Archive)
Wed, 04/21/2010 - 17:06 ET

In response to CNN anchor Rick Sanchez lunging onto the air to defend his quote-unquote "joke" when he suggested it was strange to discover a volcano in a cold place, NewsBusters has decided to spend a few days presenting other episodes of scientific genius we might see from CNN's Mr. Wizard in the months and years to come during Rick's List in the afternoon. Here's one:

"We have some new pictures of our planet from the space shuttle and well, look at that. It's actually round. You know, when I walk around outside, the world seems pretty flat. When you think of the Earth, you think of a flat disc, you don't think of a sphere. But no! There it is."

This Sanchez science satire is based on this less-than-distinguished moment:

SANCHEZ: I was just asking Chad, how can you get a volcano in Iceland? . Isn't it too- when you think of a volcano, you think of Hawaii and long words like that. You don't think of Iceland.

CHAD MYERS: Right.

SANCHEZ: You think it's too cold to have a volcano there. But no! There it is.

10. Brains alone don't mean much. I appreciate your point but Richard Nixon was intellectually brilliant
What the president needed to do a week ago is federalize this problem in the Gulf---not just hold the culpable parties responsible. Blame and legal liability have their place. We also need Big Brother to swoop in and take over the direct management of this clean up. It's not too late for him to do that. But his timing is just a little slow.

Direct action would give anklebiters like Rick Sanchez a little bit less to chatter about.

12. ...and maybe he knows some thing(s) which we don't?
The assumption is that all there si to know is on the table publically...in fact, there are issues discussed of which we know nothing. that isn't to say that that's all OK, it's just how it is. When the pro basketball coach makes a substitution with which we, as fans, might disagree, perhaps he knows that the guy or gal we want to see in there can't hit a rim for whatever reason unbeknownst to us.

15. +1 I'm so tired of people demanding information that they don't...
really need or understand and making up scenarios with no basis in reality. This is why we elected this guy. Because we were eventually going to have to trust him with our country and our lives.

I agree that the country needs to be as informed as possible but this constant carping from the Monday morning quarterbacks seems so unproductive.

14. I do believe the points they are making today
Edited on Fri May-28-10 02:51 PM by Still Sensible
are valid ones. Heck, I'm as supportive of the President as just about anyone, but the two issues they brought up in this most recent segment are on target:

1. The seeming disconnect between the "we are in charge" or "I am in charge" assertion with the two things that were revealed yesterday--one that the Admiral gives a news conference discussing the ongoing pumping of mud as part of the top kill effort when the truth is that the pumping had been suspended many hours before... and second, that the President didn't yet know whether his MMS head had been fired or resigned. No matter how you look at it, it seems to me, this disconnect is legitimate.

2. As much as President Obama eschews empty photo ops, he badly needs on this trip to at least spend a little time with real people, preferably in a location where the sludge is much more devastated than the relatively cleaner beach where he talked to the media. Obviously he has spent considerable time with the politicians in his Grand Isle visit, but if he flies back to Chicago without at least a brief visit to some people that are already being victimized by this disaster, it will be a huge mistake IMO. Photo op or not, there was nothing insincere when Bill Clinton consoled the victims in Oklahoma City... it was not insincere when Bush grabbed the bullhorn (but mission accomplished was pure political theater bullshit). Sometimes, when it is real, you have to do things like this.

I guess one reason I am frustrated is that such a politically astute person as President Obama was when campaigning for the job, he seems a little bit politically tone deaf on this disaster. Yes, he has done pretty well the last few days explaining the BP-government responsibility/accountability tightrope (save the disconnect noted above). Yes, there is an incredible commitment of resources. The media is not giving enough credit to the deliberate way the administration addresses crises. They have brought a lot of great minds together to address this crisis and they are proceeding on a logical, methodical plan to get the well gusher stopped. They know they need to improve the clea-up response and are clearly working very hard to do that.

He may not be able to do anything about the first issue except to make sure shit like that doesn't continue to happen. He better do something about the second now that he has the chance.

Edited to add: Sanchez needs to get off the goddamned Sestek non-scandal... and the White House needs to freaking destroy Issa.

16. I think it's mostly a Media generated situation + the chaos of this crisis
1. I disagree that the fact that BP lied about its progress shows anything more than the fact that BP is lying. Can't blame the Admiral or Obama.

2. Do we know that he did not? Just because Andersen Cooper wasn't there?

Maybe he seems tone deaf on the emotional aspects but I he's focused on solving problems and cannot be everywhere at once, may I add -DUH! Bush had others running the show.

3. Look what CNN is doing? Undercutting Obama at EVERY TURN. How can you believe them on anything?

PEOPLE HURTIN' DOWN THERE.

Now Rick Sanchez will bring on that congressman who cried, well he cried crocodile tears since he is up to his neck in oil money. WHERE IS THE REPORTING ON THAT?

20. The point I'm making isn't that BP isn't lying
but that those two issues fly in the face of claiming they are in control. If in fact the reason the Admiral was so out of touch that BP just didn't see the need to tell him they had suspended pumping before he went and held a press conference, than tell us that and assure us that such bullshit won't continue. And President Obama could have said I am not sure whether the MMS director resigned or was fired, but I was aware there was going to be a change. BTW, I suspect that is pretty much was he was trying to say, but it didn't quite come out that way. I'm sorry it just looks bad if you are claiming to be in charge, but say you are not aware that the person unquestionably most directly tied to the causal failures leading to this disaster is out. It strains credibility IMO.
