So why do our modern engineers struggle to match that number with (supposedly) better motor and battery technology?

4. Maybe our modern automotive companies want too much weight,
too much carrying capacity, goes too fast, etc.

Maybe we need lighter weight, goes slower, help pedal if you want, and carries less. Such as a http://americanspeedster.com">4-wheel bicycle. In fact, the image even looks a bit like the OP's pic of The Baker.

They have one with an electric hub on one of the wheels that claims to go 20 MPH without pedaling. No range cited.
