Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman continued her record-shattering spending streak this spring, burning through $33.8 million in about two months, according to a campaign finance statement filed Thursday.

That amount brings the billionaire candidate's spending total to more than $80 million, with $68 million of it coming from her own personal wealth.

The former chief executive officer of online auction firm eBay has said she's prepared to spend as much as $150 million of her own wealth on her campaign.

Whitman had $3.8 million in cash on hand as of May 22.

By comparison, Democratic candidate Jerry Brown had spent $259,582 from March 18 to May 22, bringing his campaign expenditure total to about $320,000. He received $6.8 million in campaign contributions from March 18 to May 22, and $16.7 million from Jan. 1 to May 22, the filing shows. ..........(more)

1. So why should we support a "fiscal conservative" that thinks
spending $80 million to win a job that pays $212,000 per year is a sensible idea?

2. Anyone who spends that much money is questionable
It doesn't show good management skills or responsibility. Anyone who takes that many millions out of their own pocket for an election has a hidden agenda and one that isn't good.

4. I don't think she has much else going for her besides money
She's going to lose, probably badly, to Brown, if she even makes it past the primary, and wind up a political joke that will be recalled for years.

5. Her latest ad is perfect. She's being touted by Mitt Romney,
Condasleezie Rice, and some other equal loser. In other words, people who Californians detest. Good call, Meg.

6. That's a lot of money to spend to have the honor of LOSING to Jerry Brown in Nov.
Brown now leads Whitman in the polls, a reversal of fortune that hasn't cost him a dime.
