Rand Paul, who may not be guilty of racism directly, is clearly guilty of middle of the road racism. When he support the rights of those with money and power to exclude those without from basic needs, then he is in fact siding with injurious oppression. Since Rand Paul would prefer that public water be provided by private companies, if the laws where as he would have them be, then we would see some Southern Black Men unable to obtain water for their homes, families or businesses. I am sure he would weasel around and say no that would never be done, but the truth is that he is missing the ability to empathize broadly. He has not apparently read up on the history of civil rights, or he would seriously know better. This is no slippery slope argument, this is a simple and obvious result his policies would create. With no strong government to restrict strong companies with monopolies on the basic needs of citizens, there will be no limitations on local or even national and global petty dictators. Even with weak controls and pressures on corporations, billing errors and charges for pipe repair would be used to hide all sorts of viscous behavior.
For him to say that he would have marched with MLK is rather amazing. Where is his history of forward thinking and inclusive causes? Where are his writings and lectures on racial equity? What we have here is simply a selfish man, who considers selfishness a virtue. He is too shallow to see his failings.
Of course Rand Paul is not personally racist, he just hangs out with racists, campaigns with racists, is supported by racists and agrees with racist rhetoric. These are two totally different things. One is clearly evil, the other is self serving and without compassion.
Therein is the difference, Rand Paul does not want restrictions on business, or taxes. He believes in a world where business owners can pay what they want, charge what they want, make what they want and use what they can get and dump whatever, wherever. In his mind this would be a better world. He ignores oil spills, nuclear accidents, acid rain, and climate change. He ignores sweat shops, poverty, exploitation and corruption. And as long as big money keeps rolling in to support him, he will retain these views. He never considers the business owners who have had thugs beat up and kill people who spoke out to the truth. Instead he sees unions as unfair. How dare the common man band together and try to improve their lot? He thinks that market forces will make banks honest if governments get out of their way.
When a mind is trained to skirt around all the pitfalls of compassion while seeking all the advantages of greed, it should not be surprising at all that the occasional slip is going to happen. Rand Paul's views are gentle and rational as long as you ignore the source of these views, the historical results of these views, and reality. If however you do include source, history and reality in the equation, his policies would go a long way toward making sure that wealth would be the only source of power and it would not be restrained by reason, ethic or compassion. Kind of like fascism. Sorry I should not have said that, instead let me say, exactly like fascism.
I have an idea for Rand Paul, a bit of redemption here. How about we add, not replace, but add a few more paid holidays for the hard working men and women who make our nation great! If Rand Paul were to support a couple of more days, such as a Paul Robeson day and a Barbara Jordan day, I might be inclined to believe him when he says he would have marched with MLK. I have heard him talk the talk, I have not seen him walk the walk, and you have to walk before you can march.
