Oil impacts Redfish Bay in Louisiana's bird's foot delta, where the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico. Photographed on Thursday, May 27 by Jeffrey Dubinsky, on a flyover Jeffrey and I took with Mike Tidwell, GRN advisory board member and author of "Bayou Farewell." These photos have been used by Reuters, in a story on our call for a federalized response in, and the front page of the Huffington Post.

They tell the tale far better than BP would like. We had to fly at 3,000 feet due to a 'temporary flight restriction' that has been in place since the BP drilling disaster began. For clarity's sake, we may want to refer to this as a 'media flight restriction,' no media flights have gotten approval to fly over the oil impacts, and the area that's closed has expanded exponentially, now keeping people out of the air over most of Southeast Louisiana. Our pilots have been told by BP representatives that we can't fly into these areas, once they find out we're with environmental groups and we have cameras.

At 3,000 feet you need an awfully long lens and an awfully clear day to get any decent shots, but our photographer really captured powerful images on this trip. It's clear the oil has fouled a wide stretch of the bird's foot delta. It's safe to assume this won't be the last area spoiled, though I can't guarantee we'll be able to get you the images.

2. LA Times images- mostly shore-based- high quality

Terrance Castle of Houma, La., wipes the sweat off his head soon after beginning the cleanup of oil on a beach near Grand Isle.

A dead oil-soaked bird washes up on a beach near Grand Isle, La., as a crew works to clean up the sludge that has made landfall. Locals have also begun to worry about hurricane season.
(Carolyn Cole / Los Angeles Times / May 21, 2010)

Workers hired by BP rake up globs of oil, which have come ashore on the beaches in southern Louisiana, near Port Fourchon and Grand Isle. It coats the beaches, and each wave brings a new batch.

3. Shouldn't their priorities on shore clean-up be the marshes?
Aren't the wetlands more ecological fragile and environmentally necessary than the beaches? I don't say this to imply that the beaches should be left to devastation, because they are obviously environmentally & economically important, but rather to question the priorities of where the resources are focused on for the long term recovery of the ecosystem. CMIIW, but I thought that the BP COO said today that only 37 acres of wetlands are being "cleaned-up"--meaning a few strings of ineffective sop-up buoys have been placed.

4. That's a good question.
And since it seems that BP tends to not give reliable estimates of anything, who knows if it has amounted to even that much.

6. If we don't take some prisoners this time, we will see this again
That we can know. If we ever recover from THIS. We still can't even fathom what this is and how it really ends. I just know they want as much of this out of sight and out of mind as possible. We can't afford to cooperate with their wants.

Swampie,I am so sorry. I don't even know what else to say.

9. I keep on hearing that BP has flight restrictions in place
What the hell is that?

Why isn't someone saying "um, you've been lying from the start so, fuck you, we're going in with cameras and showing the American people how you've royally screwed the Gulf environment, and Gulf economies. And possibly most of the rest of the east coast of America if we're REALLY unlucky this hurricane season..."?

How are they allowed to have these restrictions? How are they enforcing them? Is it legal? and if it is, WHY IS IT?!

The anger over the questions is mind numbing, almost as much as their sheer indifference to what they've done...

to making the minimum payment on your credit card.

You'll never get ahead.
