Here it is...

BP says top kill has not stopped Gulf oil leak and now considering other options
By The Times-Picayune
May 29, 2010, 1:48PM

<snip>

A BP executive says the company has yet to stop the oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico and is considering other ways to plug the leak.

A source told The Times-Picayune that officials would announce the failure of the top kill option at a 4 p.m. Saturday briefing in Robert.

BP is expected to announce that it will move on to its next option, known as LMRP. The procedure involves cutting off the failed, leaking riser at the top of the Lower Marine Riser Package on the blowout preventer to get a clean-cut surface on the pipe.

Then the company will install a cap with a sealing grommet that would be connected to a new riser from the Discoverer Enterprise drillship, with the hopes of capturing most of the oil and gas flowing from the well.

BP began a risky operation known as "top kill" on Wednesday. The procedure involves pumping heavy drilling mud into the crippled well in a bid to stop the oil. It's never been tried in 5,000 feet of water.

The oil spill began after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded last month, killing 11 people. It's the worst spill in U.S. history, dumping between 18 million and 40 million gallons into the Gulf.

1. Comments at the "Oil Drum" suggest they have a saw in place, preparing for LMRP.
LMRP or a BOP on BOP solution, but the riser has to be sawn off first.

Doing this will allow full flow of material from the BOP until such time as the LMRP or added BOP are in place.

7. 'Deepwater Denial' is a very apt phrase.
Unfortunately, only when they are drinking oily water and eating old food out of tin cans the reality will sink in. :(

18. That's it in a nutshell
They were unrecing this thread before most DUers had a chance to even see it.

I know who some of them are, and I will take them to task every chance I get.

As the one-armed Cajun dude in the movie 'Southern Comfort' said, "Y'all don't fuck wit us!"

4. What good is cutting the pipe ...
.. when there are three places that the toxins are coming out? Considering this there is only one solution imo; A barge or tanker flipped upside down to cover the entire area, with a connection installed at the bottom (now top) to send the toxins to tankers on the surface (oil rises and will push most of the water out the bottom).

However, this requires a location to store all the stuff. I have heard that most of the worlds tankers are already full waiting for the price of crude to go up. I can also hear BP execs private response, "Pffftt, that's no solution, the oil would be inferior, with some water mixed in!"

8. All the leaks are in the pipe
Cut off the pipe from the top of the BOP, connect the LMRP, and we are on the way to a solution.

12. Well then they should start cutting NOW
And shoud have been using my (and others) upside down tanker idea from the beginning (which I mentioned in the first week) SHIT!

Go change your own car oil, take the old stuff and dump in the river or lake in front of witnesses and see what happens to you. Now multiply that by... well, do the math

6. but, but, but...
Isn't this premature? Shouldn't they give top kill a chance? Why, just yesterday "BP executives say they won't know until Sunday whether progress was made in sealing the leak."

:sarcasm:

9. True
Let's give it a chance. "ARGGHH!!" The whole top kill BS was for show. Maybe it didn't start that way but soon became simply a stall tactic imo. I mentioned this a few days ago and caught hell in here for it. That this top kill seems to be for show, now more and more are beginning to belive the same.

14. I wouldn't say it's "just for show". Nothing is going to stop this until relief wells are drilled.
Everything else is just an attempt at stopping the well, yet none of it besides the relief wells are the permanent fix.

17. All I can say is...
If this solution is inferior to the "top kill" solution, is it any more than a PR ploy? Basically, they want to tape a new blowout preventer in place. Good luck guys, but I think you're just jerking us around again.
