Gulf Coast Dem still backs oil drilling, says spill is not Katrina
By Vicki Needham - 05/29/10 12:58 PM ET

Despite frustration over industry response to the oil spill, Mississippi Rep. Gene Taylor (D) continues to back oil drilling as part of a reduction in the nation's dependence on imported supplies.

"I was for offshore drilling, and I remain for offshore drilling," Taylor, who represents the coastal 4th District, told WLOX News on Saturday.

Despite opposition by many Americans to offshore drilling, Taylor said opinion on the issue sways as the price of gasoline rises and falls.

He also urged anyone to avoid making comparisons of the oil spill's devastation to Hurricane Katrina, which slammed into the Gulf Coast in 2005.

"This is not Katrina. This is terrible, but this is not Katrina," he said. "There will not be 47,000 Mississippi families homeless tonight as there were the night after Katrina."

5. No,it's not Katrina.
It's going to be worse. At first, the problem wasn't apparent and people weren't on their roofs the next day. This storm's build-up has been hidden. It has now hit the Gulf, and people are starting to take notice.

I am not trying to minimize the suffering of those caught in Katrina. It was horrible, and the government made a mess of that too. The fact that a lot of those areas remain devastated is a continuing reminder of how poor we are at keeping a problem in our minds. There should have been a 'Marshall Plan' for that area.

This catastrophe will be visible for a long, long time. In addition, the effects will be felt by many who aren't even near the gusher. If Katrina had blown as a Cat 3 all over the US, maybe we would have a better idea of the damage it caused. It would also have given us a taste of what is coming with this.

The oil itself may or may not directly land on you. However, the effects of its damage will in some way. I can't even begin to imagine all of the ramifications from it.

We have surely reaped the whirlwind this time.
