This might be a clue as to why BP's Voilcano isn't being fixed post haste: Serpent Project
Don't want us drilling and shipping anymore? How about we pump it straight from the well to the refinery?

"The oceans of the world are a vast, alien landscape, covering more than half the Earth's surface. It is the last great frontier on our planet and the SERPENT project is exploring this exciting undersea environment in a unique and innovative deep sea adventure.

It is only through the generous help of offshore oil and gas companies and their highly skilled ROV teams that SERPENT can undertake this vital work. These dedicated professionals are helping us to push the boundaries of deep sea research, and contributing to our growing knowledge of the open oceans.

SERPENT is a global project hosted by the DEEPSEAS group, within Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems (OBE) at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS). The project has a growing network of UK and global partners."

Oh, yeah...BP is a FOUNDING PARTNER....

1. I'm having trouble finding anything about pumping oil on their site
http://www.serpentproject.com/aboutus.php

They seem to be some sort of liason between Big Oil and oceanographic researchers, so scientists can piggyback on Big Oil's infrastructure and logistical expertise to do research. I don't see anything nefarious, but I could be missing something.

3. Chevron, BP and Stat Oil
Chevron, BP and Stat Oil are top partners. I don't think there is anything nefarious about wanting to make a profit.

Project name "developmental driller II" was on the side of the rig that sank.

Resources

FTP STUFF

Address:

ftp:serpentftp@ftp.noc.soton.ac.uk

(copy/paste this into address bar in browser).

Login: Un: serpentftp Pw: dontforget

Then IN THE BROWSER select the folders option and you will see the ftp folder. You can now do normal file transfers using the new folder.

NOTE! Because it's using ftp, it will take a while for files to appear or be moved.

Be selective about who you give the ftp details to and stress that it needs to be kept secure.
Also, we need to keep this area free of content as much as possible, firstly as it has limited security and secondly because there is a limited amount of space available for us to use. When you have finished with a file, either move or delete it from the ftp folder please.

Mostly videos of fish. There's a biodiversity survey in PowerPoint.

6. "How about we pump it straight from the well to the refinery?"
Um they have been doing that a couple decades.
The wells in the Gulf have pipes and the pipes run right to the refineries.

Also SERPENT seems to be a good thing. ROV operators when not conducting drilling operations can use their undersea talents to observe marine life. Oh noes. The horrors.

FAIL
