Veterans Group Upset City Of Melbourne Will Not Pay For Barricades, Police

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- For the first time in more than a decade, the annual Memorial Day parade will not roll through the streets of Melbourne, which has upset many veterans.

"It's somewhat of a disgrace," said retired Marine Darell Tumbleson, who received three Purple Hearts serving in Vietnam. "We support the community. We would just like a little respect back and somebody support us."

In the past, the city of Melbourne did not charge the veterans group for barricades and police officers to assist with crowd control. But late last year, facing budget problems, the Melbourne City Council voted to pass those costs on to all organizations that received special events permits.

1. But I bet the city council has not taken any cuts
because the world would end if they had to cut back.

I thought this day was for everyone in the city so it is not a special events program. It is a city program.

2. Why couldn't the city of Melbourn have joined wtih a neighboring
city and have one joint parade? If they don't have the money, they don;t have the money! I do think they could have joined with one or more other locations and had one joint parade to honor all the veterans.
