Veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam remember time at war

The stories we hear on Memorial Day are from the living; the people we honor are the dead.

Memorial Day dates from after the Civil War as a way to honor those who died in defense of their country. Monday is the official Memorial Day, with services and events planned throughout Northern Nevada to remember the men and women who have served and died in America's wars.

And although military veterans will tell you their day is Veterans Day in November, they are the ones who will march in this weekend's parades and carry the flags and remind us all of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many.

The Reno Gazette-Journal asked several combat veterans to talk about their experience in war and how it affected their lives.

There's a picture on the wall in Bill Filter's study painted by an artist named William Draper. An injured soldier is being loaded aboard a ship. Five of his fellows support him on a litter as he's lifted onto the evacuation ship in a cradle of cargo ropes.

"You're up there about a hundred feet or so "» man!" said Filter, a Reno businessman, as he admired the painting.
