Every rig in the gulf....
...should be pumping the oil laden water up and through an oil-water separator.

Every available barge and tanker should be like wise filtering the polluted waters.

Why isn't this being done? Go ahead, experts, tell me why.

1. They'd have to cluster together and drill into this reservoir.
It'd take a year or more to even get the rigs in position, and then it wouldn't work, because the ships necessary to deliver freight (drill pipe, food goods, mud) and offload freight (refuse, grey and black water) couldn't reach the rigs because you'd have them all clustered together. And if you figured that out, it'd take months for them to spud wells and penetrate the formation. Didn't think that through to well, huh?

3. Me? You didn't even read it
Bub, the oil is spreading across the whole eastern Gulf of Mexico.

And there you are with your head at the hole.

Read the OP again, apparently for the first time.

7. Right I misread, sorry. Still wouldn't work.
Rigs are engineered to drill, not pump. Mud pumps would burn out pumping water. And what's up with the insulting 'bub'? Stay classy.

10. Your post sounded snarky
Hence the "bub" .... and my reply to you, below. By the way, I agree with you and not the OP for the reasons you cite. But the idea still has some merit.

5. Didn't read the suggestion very well, did you?
You're spouting off about drilling wells. The OP's suggestion is to disconnect from the wells and simply pump seawater and run it through filters and put the oil into tankers.

I'm not saying the idea would work. I'm saying you misread it.

12. Mud pumps?
Ever hear of WATER pumps?

The oil will be in the gulf for several years unless we pump it out and, here's a new one for ya: Recycle the oil!!! OMG!!!

13. So now you want
to disassemble the rigs (remove dericks, remove decking) remove the mud pumps, insert water pumps, reassemble the rigs, then commision them, then have them tugged to location? All that is done in dry dock, it'd take 20 years to get that done. Is there even enough drydock on the planet to handle such a job all at once?

14. Wow!! JOBS
You make it all sound so hard. But then you are one of those experts, eh?

You hang a water pump from the floor of the rig, with one hose sucking from the gulf and the other hose leading to a filter which separates oil from water. The filtered water drops back into the gulf.

We could even have solar powered pumps. OMG!!! More JOBS!!

15. Why not just use ships and barges?
What is your fixation on doing things the hard way with rigs? And why do your arguments continually shift around all over the place? I'm not an expert in marine or petroleum engineering, I've just worked on them for 7 years as a geologist. Why the continual condescension and snark in your posts?

24. You're right, I'm wrong.
I offer most humble apologies for ever having dared point out your nonsensical approaches to such a calamity, and doing so with callous disregard for your delicate sensibilities and feelings.

Is that a live load or a dead load?

(You're one to talk by the way.)

25. Good Gawd, dude
Do you want to get the oil cleaned up or just argue stupid shit?

This is a new calamity for which the American 'can do spirit' is going to be tested.
Either we do this or we just become, basically, a third world banana republic.

2. Allegedly there is not enough maneuvering room in the GOM
For the supertankers to operate w/o the danger of collisions.

But I also have read that many are still holding crude that has yet to be offloaded to refineries located all over the world.

Us lowly citizen grunts will likely never know what the truth really is.

4. That's the truth
We will not be told the truth unless, we, all together, demand the truth.

It f'n pisses me off to see people here participating in keeping the truth hidden.

Would that they were that smart.

What you see here are the willfully ignorant, those who protect the administration at all costs (including the cost of their personal credibility), and those who think they know something about stuff they know nothing about.

17. Many of the tankers might have to be emptied @ their "destination"
Then travel to the GOM empty. I do not pretend to know what the logistics are and the time needed to organize and manage an unprecedented operation at the mind-boggling scale needed for success, nor how many tugs are required or even available to assist the barges and tankers there...

19. Shrimpers and their now useless boats
Oystermen and their now useless boats for nearshore.

Longliners and their now useless boats.

All towing small barges built by boat builders who now can build useful boats.

Really, all snark aside, we do have the equipment. Will it be used? That is the question.

21. Some tankers unload their cargo into an offshore GOM port.
It's known as the LOOP (Louisiana Offshore Oil Port).

https://www.loopllc.com/

Perhaps a tanker could unload their cargo into the LOOP and then repurpose to help pick up the spill.

23. Not completely certain, but..
Edited on Sun May-30-10 12:39 PM by Urban Prairie
I think that I have read a while ago, that there have not been any new refineries built in the US for over 20 years or so...

That the refineries we do have are running at capacity right now, and all or most other producing wells (worldwide) might need to be completely shut down so that the Gulf crude could be given top precedence by most refineries located globally.

That might slow to a crawl or maybe even stop the delivery of refined products such as gasoline, diesel, propane, and the like to be used by US companies, raise the price of gasoline to say $10.00 a gallon and deprive our military of the energy resources needed to fight overseas...

Just a guess..

16. retired executive from shell said this to KO when he was on the show
KO just passed it off. This executive wrote the book "Why we hate the oil companies"
He said you could have the tankers criss cross the water and pump oil and water into the hold then pump the water overboard.

You also have unused fishing boats with large wet wells where they hold the fish. That could put rubber bladders in and pump oil and water into and then pump water back overboard.

The one boat with scientist said they saw a oil below the surface that was 4 miles wide and 15 miles long. They didn't say how deep

We need to recover the oil that out there.

20. Because BP is trying to cover their ass by not letting the enormity of
the situation to be seen by all those barges and tankers to go home and tell the world. I really wish the President would commandeer or seize every bit of equipment he can from the oil companies under national emergency and send the Navy in to coordinate the operation. If they can plan a battle on the seas, they can do this as well. My suspicion is that the last oil billionaires, who were in charge of our government, Bush/Cheney/Rice/Rumsfeld are intimidating Obama and hindering him in doing this by sending in their hit man Karl Rove to engineer a big blackmail scenario for those in charge in Washington who could stifle any attempts the President might be doing to make this situation better. I believe they have the power to do this. See what happens when you don't impeach criminals when they are in office, put them on trial, and then throw them in prison so they can't do any harm anymore?

Yes, I'm putting my :tinfoilhat: on and I know what I'm saying is only conjecture, but frankly it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

22. Makes good sense
There is BIG money here. No telling what goes on when BIG money is on the table.

And some of the players at the table are bushco.

Always did say this about this mess: if the people don't stand up now and demand what is ours, we lose it all. This is a defining moment for us.
