Sarah Palin: Memorial Day, to Remember Past and Present Sacrifice

“Let no neglect, no ravages of time, testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.” - General Orders No.11, Grand Army of the Republic Headquarters, May 5, 1868

This weekend, as we enjoy time with family and friends, we should stop and remember the meaning of this national holiday. Memorial Day is a uniquely American holiday that finds its origins in the aftermath of our Civil War, when our country searched for a proper way to commemorate the many who had fallen in the long struggle to end slavery and unify our nation.

Today, we remember all of those throughout our history and to this very day who gave their lives serving our country in uniform. Our prayers are especially with the surviving family members for whom everyday is memorial day, as they live on remembering their loved ones who died selflessly to protect the freedoms we hold dear.

And on Memorial Day, let us also remember all veterans, past and present, because everyone who wears the uniform and swears the oath is willing to make that ultimate sacrifice for America. So, in honoring them let’s keep in mind this version of a popular poem as we show respect for those willing to sacrifice all for our exceptional country:

“It is the veteran, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the veteran, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the veteran, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the veteran, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the veteran, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the veteran, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

It is the veteran, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin will be draped by the flag.”

- Sarah Palin

4. If there is ONE person who should STFU on Memorial Day, it's Palin.
And yet, in the style of George W. Bush, she sees the occasion as a means to get her name in print, to screech "DO YA LUUUUUUUUUURVE YA FREEDOMS?" to a crowd of inbred and clueless acolytes.

God Bless America indeed...America NEEDS it.

5. Actually, it's the "people" who gave us all these things
And "we" are doing a pretty shitty job of carrying on the gifts we have received.

Due in no small part to slime like Palin.

6. This is objectively false
First, she suggests it's an "either/or" argument: that ONLY veterans gave us our freedoms, to the exclusion of anyone else.

Well that is just not true. While there are many examples of veterans bravely risking and giving their lives to defend the freedom of the American people, to suggest that only veterans shall be credited with such achievements is just false at best, and sheer militaristic demagoguery at worst.

7. Civilian and military people have contributed
some as both. I honor the service of those who never served a day in the military but who laid all on the line for the good of our country just as much as any of us who put it all on the line for our nation. It isn't just those on the front lines who fight wars but the nation as a whole. To dismiss those who sacrifice for the nation on any front to give us a decent and respectable nation are what makes us great, military or civilian it is the ones that get active and do what they can that gave us this nation and that will keep us a nation worth living in. We have many problems today because too many either didn't get involved, or refused to work to make things work for the good of the nation. I hope we will have more and more get serious and look beyond ourselves for the good of our country.

Who fought in wars to give Palin the right to publicly insult civilians, many over the years whom have ALSO sacrificed their time, health, freedoms, and in some instances even their very lives to improve or protect the health, freedoms, and livelihoods of their fellow countrymen:

Police?

Physicians?

Union Leaders?

Firefighters?

Inventors?

Researchers?

Strikers?

Scientists?

Biologists?

Lawyers?

Reporters?

Protesters?

Whistle-Blowers?

Palin is and has been a grifting self-centered hypocrite, as well as an attention-seeking parasite who sponges off of others' hard work, accomplishments, and sacrifice to promote her own agenda. A sign of true intelligence is the degree of humility that each person expresses and possesses, virtues of which Palin completely lacks.
