Former Officers Sentenced For Mistreating Homeless
Two former Greenville police officers were sentenced to 3 years probation Friday after admitting they mistreated a homeless person in custody.
Jeremiah Milliman pleaded guilty to two counts of deprivation of civil rights in April. He admitted that in September 2009 he poked a deaf, mute homeless man with a pen to make him cry out and also poured hand sanitizer on his head.Milliman also admitted to striking a second homeless man and causing his lip to bleed.
Matt Jowers pleaded guilty to one count of the same charge in March. He admitted to pushing that same homeless man into a patrol car so hard it dented the vehicle.
Milliman was also ordered to perform 300 hours of community service. The judge ordered 250 hours for Jowers.

Ryan Beasley, Milliman's attorney, said the mitigating circumstances of that encounter will be revealed during the sentencing.
"The guy was drunk in a convenient store -- was carrying a knife -- and he resisted arrest," Beasley said. "They had to carry him and forcibly put him in the squad car and then he started kicking at the back window. My client had to open the door and calm him down."
Beasley added that the homeless man was covered with dirt and his client attempted to clean him.
"He didn't have a water bottle so he used hand sanitizer to wash his head and face off," said Beasley.:eyes:
