2. Harry Truman fought in WWI when he was a young man
and when the soldiers returned from that war there was no GI Bill, so poor young men just came back and went to work.. Only the privileged ones got college..

7. Thank you for mentioning that. This is why so many young men & women now are in the Military!
We must always remember that it is the Veterans who go to War for our President's and Congresses wishes! They are there to serve the best they can.

General of the Continental Army seems like an odd job for a pot farmer.

6. Did a bit of searching on Abraham Lincoln....b/c I know he was largely self-taught, yet a lawyer...
here's what I found:

Where did Abraham Lincoln go to law school?

Lincoln was a voracious reader. He had a habit of reading everything that came into his hands. He once walked six miles to borrow a book on English grammar, then read and understood it completely in six days.

It was common in Lincoln's day to become a lawyer by reading and studying on one's own, and then passing the bar exams. That was the route Lincoln followed.

The first law book he read was "The Statutes of Indiana." He was still a lad and he read the book just for the sake of reading something. His next book was Blackstone's "Commentaries," an English law classic, which he obtained purely by accident.

Shortly after Lincoln had been elected to the legislature, he was advised to study law. He walked twenty miles to borrow the books from which he studied, and read forty pages as he walked back home.

He was admitted to the bar in 1837.

11. I could not support anyone without an advanced degree now.
The world has changed. Anything less would be like letting an Licensed Vocational Nurse perform open heart surgery.

16. I did not say anything about an Ivy League education.
Edited on Sun May-30-10 09:52 PM by BrightKnight
An education is within reach of just about anyone that really wants it now. My sister earned her degree as a working single mother of two. I worked 3 jobs and put myself through college. Paying off my loans was difficult and took forever but I did that too. I do not want anyone that is not willing to do what it takes to get a proper education running my Country.

I am sure that everyone on that list would have a degree given the opportunities that we have now.

12. Lincoln read at least a hundred more books than Shrub.
For some people, a college education is a waste.

15. One must not forget to distinguish
education from intelligence. I've heard of a
person who was educated to speak, read and write
fluently in seven languages. However, he lied in all
seven of them.
