BP says a relief well will kill spill
Petro executive claims that a months-long construction can eventually stop the disaster
By Associated Press

*

A BP executive says a relief well is the "end point" of efforts to stop the Gulf oil spill -- which suggests there's little chance of plugging the leak until the new well is completed in August.

BP managing director Bob Dudley tells ABC's "This Week" that the current attempt to cap the leaking well would at best minimize the oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.

Dudley says the relief well expected to be ready at the end of August "is certainly the end point on this game."

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

2. They have to say that. This is how they avoid doing multiple relief wells.
Many engineers give it a 50% chance of working. It's not a certainty but it's not like BP to have a viable back up plan!

3. Are BP's Last, Best Hope Relief Wells Sure Things?
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2010/05/are_last_best_hope_relief_well.html

>>"In this case it's kind of hard," said Milgram. "You are drilling through mostly rock. It's not going to be fast."

When the same oil-bearing rock is eventually reached by the relief well drill rig, the sealing of the broken well can finally begin.

First, seawater is pumped into the rock through the relief well. If all goes according to plan, that water should make its way into the lower end of the leaking well, displacing oil. If that succeeds, the next step is to pump in a mineral mud, which follows the sea water up the broken well. Once that mud fills the well, concrete can be pumped into the relief well.

"If you get a tall tower of mud, and if you're lucky, you'll stop it," said Milgram. "The next day you pump concrete and then the well is dead."

The mud and concrete work by their by density and shear weight, which is enough to counter the highly pressurized oil moving up the well.

There are a lot of "ifs" in that passage. Clearly, many pieces will need to come together if the relief wells are to work.

5. August...
2 or 3 stalled hurricanes in the gulf this summer will push that estimated completion time to September or October.

With only 1 relief well going if the target is missed and they have to start over again we could be looking at November or worse.

It's not reasonable for us to believe any time estimates on when BP will be able to stop this volcano of oil in the gulf, especially with a potentially volatile hurricane season firing up. :(

7. What a horrible, horrible mess.......
Even though 'August' isn't what we all want to hear.....if that's the truth of it....we'd rather/better hear the truth.

I'm all for truth, even if it's painful.

 that that's the best that can be done.....but *thanks* for 'not leading me on' any further.

8. BP is straight lies and they know only slightly more than the average 12yo about fixing the problem
Their solutions look like a brainstorming exercises with little kids using crayons on the 1st grade paper.

Fuck, they didn't even drill the damn well, that was contracted out to Transocean to do the work. BP is bullshit. They've totally just been running game and playing that tired being lord of the manor makes us super geniuses bullshit that Americans eat up because they want to believe that one day it'll be them.

Hell, they are bullshit just for saying the relief well is a sure thing. It's damn likely but certainly not a 100%. These con-artists should be punted. They aren't doing a thing that's not in the standard playbook that's been around for too many years to even apply to the circumstances anymore because of the depths.

I think people should be too smart on here to fall for their weak flim flam game. People have forgotten those transparent smirky Bush lies already I guess.
