Netanyahu gives 'full backing' to raid on aid flotilla
Monday, May 31, 2010
OTTOWA - Daily News with wires

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave his "full backing" Monday to Israel's military forces after the deadly raid on the aid flotilla carrying aid to the Gaza Strip.

"The prime minister... reiterated his full backing for the Israeli Defense Forces and inquired about the well being of the wounded," his office told AFP in Ottawa.

Netanyahu was meeting Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

5. And The Israeli Government Thumbs It's Nose At The World.
This would not be allowed of any other government and it shouldn't be allowed here.

9. There's where you're wrong
It IS allowed by government by pure definition of 'government.'

The lesson here is "Folks, don't fuck with ANY government; you are outgunned, outspent and outspun."

7. Netanyahu govt. could be the worst thing to ever happen to Israel
This event is exactly the type of thing that Israel will not be able to explain or lie away. This is not the same thing as killing during the Gaza war or from the blockade. The Israelis could effectively hide those deaths and attack anyone that later investogated them (Goldstone Report). No, this incident will look horrific to the rest of the world regardless of the Israeli's position. Ironically, even if the use of such massive deadly force were appropriate, the rest of the world will not see it that way.

BiBi's hard line government could severely backfire and cause the country great hardship in the future.

8. what's their excuse - uh - rationale
behind the attack? What spin are they going to give this so it seems like they were right to attack and kill humanitarians?

11. They say it was self defense
They say they searched 5 ships for weapons and the sixth ship they searched, the soldiers were attacks with clubs and whatnot. (I went and looked at the JerusalemPost website, I don't think I should link it here) At the Israel embassy website site a few days ago, (I checked)they expressed suspicions about the ultimate 'intent' of the flotilla.

I stay out of this issue here, but I wanted to see what both 'sides' are saying. I'm more or less ignorant on I/P affairs, I do know a bit. This is a horrid human tragedy and it makes me very sad

claim the Israelis fired on them first.

I wouldn't doubt that at all.

17. It's just awful
I don't know what's ok for discussion in GD, and like I said, I'm more or less ignorant, but apparently Israel thought the flotilla was suppling Hamas with weapons. I just think, if this is the case, the soldiers could have avoided killing people, somehow right? They expected trouble apparently. They should be able to avoid it. They KNEW the situation was volatile. The article said the soldiers were attacked by 'hundreds' of people on the boat. I don't know, I wasn't there and I'll try to remain open minded, but it's very difficult at this point.

13. He should wait his dumb ass until he gets back to Israel and finds out exactly what went on.
Just a thought. Unless he really has been appraised of every little detail.

He's just going to look like more of a belligerant asshole.

In a world with tanking global economies and super-economies, it pays to be friendly with other countries that you may need to trade with in order to keep bread on everyone's tables.

16. Netanyahu is Israel's Bush.
Why do they elect him? He is toxic to Israel and the Middle East. As long as he and his party are in power, there will be no peace there.
