Sweden on Monday summoned the Israeli ambassador to Stockholm over the "unacceptable" Gaza flotilla raid in which Israeli commandos killed up to 19 people.
"I summoned the Israeli ambassador this morning to tell him that we thought (the raid) was completely unacceptable and that we are taking the situation very seriously," State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Frank Belfrage told reporters.
Shock and outrage swept the globe Monday after Israeli commandos stormed a flotilla of aid ships bound for the Gaza Strip, as the Jewish state's foes and allies closed ranks in condemning the deadly raid.
"We want a clarification over what has happened," Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told Sveriges Radio. "We know that there are Swedes on some of the ships and we want to know what has happened to them. There appears no reason to question media reports that a Turkish vessel has been boarded, that a fire fight occurred and that people have been killed".
The UN's rights chief Navi Pillay said she was "shocked" at the violence of the raid, which left at least 10 dead, many of them reportedly Turks, while the European Union demanded a full inquiry from Tel-Aviv.
