So, my favorite Wingnut emails me a story about how people are becoming more skeptical
about global warming. Here was my response:

That's a great idea! Science by popular vote.

After they decide against global warming, maybe they could consider rounding pi off to an even 3 so we don't have to deal with all those little numbers after the decimal: 3.14159....

And for a followup maybe they could decide to go after the Gravitational Constant, which is now 6.67300 × 10^-11 m3 kg^-1 s^-2

All they would have to do is get the majority to go along with changing that little superscript "-11" above the "10." If they change it to a -12, then everything will get ten times lighter, so people could jump higher and it would cost a lot less to move freight. Just think of all the energy we could save with one simple little change in the law!

2. Can we change the boiling point of water too?
100 Farenheight... we know now one here wants to change to Centigrade.

Let's outlaw words with more than two syllables while we're at it.

3. Does that mean that the law about 2 syllables
can't use the word "syllable" lest it outlaw itself?

8. You got it!
Beats. The word syllable will no longer exist... words now have beats instead.

Or... that word is not real. All words have one beat. It is hard to talk that way.

11. Hey, let's start a campaign to change the speed of light
Either much faster or much slower would be really cool! Actually, maybe we could apply speed zones, so it's faster or slower in different areas.

I can just imagine what the lobbyists would do with this.

Then, everybody has to think in base 12 and base 16 and base 128...and try to figure out prices per ounce on a 6-and-a-quarter ounce can of tuna.

19. Changing pi to exactly 3 would also put it in line with the Bible
II Chronicles 4:2.

I'm sure your freeper friend will appreciate that.

30. "I refuse to prove that I exist," says God,"...
"for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."

"But," says Man, "the Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."

"Oh dear," says God, "I hadn't though of that" and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

Rest well, Douglas Adams...

20. My physics is rusty but I think you're wrong about gravity.
You write:

All they would have to do is get the majority to go along with changing that little superscript "-11" above the "10." If they change it to a -12, then everything will get ten times lighter, so people could jump higher and it would cost a lot less to move freight.

All freight would still have the same mass, so it would still require the same energy to move it laterally. Reducing the gravitational constant would change only the downward force of gravity that has to be overcome in lifting or hoisting an object.

I'd guess that the vast majority of expenses incurred in moving freight don't relate to lifting.

But, yes, we could all jump higher.

21. Well, yes, mass & inertia would remain the same
but I think friction would be decreased. It's easier to drag a 1-lb. weight around on the sidewalk than a 10-lb. weight.

That's a little different than what you're trying to argue against.

easily throw us in to another ice age. We just don't know. They can't refute humans throwing the CO2 levels way out of the norm.
