WAR ROOM
"Ground Zero Mosque" protest ends up, predictably, with racially-motivated hatred
BY ALEX PAREENE

There was a protest yesterday, attended by various wingnuts, racists, riled-up nativists, and terrified fools, of the supposed "Ground Zero mosque." (It will not be at Ground Zero, and it will actually be a community center that will include a mosque. But still.)

- snip -

Anyway, they had their protest yesterday. Mike Kelly of the Bergen (New Jersey) Record reported this heartwarming incident:

At one point, a portion of the crowd menacingly surrounded two Egyptian men who were speaking Arabic and were thought to be Muslims.

"Go home," several shouted from the crowd.

"Get out," others shouted.

In fact, the two men – Joseph Nassralla and Karam El Masry — were not Muslims at all. They turned out to be Egyptian Coptic Christians who work for a California-based Christian satellite TV station called "The Way." Both said they had come to protest the mosque.

"I'm a Christian," Nassralla shouted to the crowd, his eyes bulging and beads of sweat rolling down his face.

But it was no use. The protesters had become so angry at what they thought were Muslims that New York City police officers had to rush in and pull Nassralla and El Masry to safety.

"I flew nine hours in an airplane to come here," a frustrated Nassralla said afterward.

But don't you dare call these people bigots!

1. There seems to be alot of bigotry in many places.
As long as people see it for what it is, then it is best for it to be in the open.

7. Seems everyone has a self-perceived monopoly on common sense...
Seems many people have a self-perceived monopoly on common sense whilst simultaneously believing that any opposing viewpoints are anything but.

12. Why isn't it appropriate?
It's not at Ground Zero it's blocks away. The congregation had members that died that day as well.

4. Reading the sign of the woman in the picture, one is left to wonder
if she realizes that her sign makes no sense, as New York is not holy land to anyone.

I mean . . . what the hell does that even mean? How on Earth could the building of a mosque in a secular city compare in any way to building a Synagogue in an Islamic holy city?

5. The Dumbing Of America...
So many in this country have grown up in a bubble...an American myopia perpetuated by our media and popular culture. Every news story is always framed in how things around the world affect the US or how the US can or should affect it. They go to movies and watch TV shows where bad guys had Russian and then "Arabic" accents...easy to create boogie men and straw men. The "Jack Bauer" generation has lived in a world with little understanding and generally disdain for others. If they look or sound different, they're inferior. It's a simplistic world that is seen by others as the "stupid" or ugly American...and they have many valid points.

It's always amusing to watch Christians and Jews tie themselves in knots trying to justify "their" god is different from the "Muslim" one. They're blissfully ignorant of their intolerance...and are proud of it. Sadly, in tough times like we're in, such intolerance gains popularity as its used as a diversion by politicians and others from the real causes of their problems.

8. There are a number of DUers who are opposed to this mosque.
They posted about it in numerous threads about a month ago.

Yet in the half dozen times this latest development has been discussed in GD, they have yet to show themselves.

I wonder why.

11. Protests led by Pamela Geller
who is now President of the "Stop Islamification of America". The European branch has very close ties to the Neo Nazi British National Party. Enough said.
