JCCC, ex-student clash over free speech

An attorney’s report has cleared Johnson County Community College of allegations that a former student’s free speech right was violated.

The former student, Kathy Brown, said the report, which was released last week, was full of inaccuracies. She noted that attorney Ann Kenney Molloy was paid $11,500 by the college for the investigation.

Brown, a Kansas City attorney and nurse, told the college’s board of trustees in April that she was told she could not discuss anything on campus that made anyone else uncomfortable — described later as a “discomfort doctrine.”

She also said she was kicked off an online diversity discussion group because of her opposition to same-sex marriage and her conservative views.

Terry Calaway, college president, denied that a discomfort doctrine existed and labeled her allegation as ludicrous.
