Banned in the USA, Al Jazeera now online at YouTube

18 April 2007 — Nalaka Gunawardene

“The world’s first English language news channel to have its headquarters in the Middle East; covering the world, bridging cultures and setting the news agenda.”

That’s the marketing line of Al Jazeera International (AJI), launched on 15 November 2006.

It’s been slowly building up an audience, which it now claims to be around 90 million households.

But not in the United States of America: it was shut out of most American homes because cable companies have refused to carry their signal.

Do you like the idea that there are satellite stations that our government won't lets us see? I noticed in another thread where someone mentioned that North Korea has state-censored national television. And they do. But what about us? Ever thought about that? Lot of satellite stations that are censored here in the US. I guess its for our own good? Ever see al-Manar(Hezbollah TV), on your screen? No, you wont. Its for our own good though. Probably watch that for a few hours and we would all instantly turn into Islamic terrorists. What do you think?

2. Thank you. Could I bother you for a link to al-Manar?
I have searched like hell and can't find one.

5. Are you able to watch the live satellite 24 hour news feed anywhere there?
I don't seem able to find anything like that at those links.

3. Yes, I watch it daily--thankfully, my satellite provider has LinkTV--so I get amazing programming.
With the exception of KO, Rachel, Ed, Jon and Stephen, there is no point in watching american "news".

It makes me sick that there is so much censorship--and then, we have dear ole Joe's comments yesterday about "just relax as we censor the internet"

As I have observed for decades, one cannot control an educated people who can think for themselves--and what passes for education and "news" in this country has, for a very long time, been designed to make sure people do not, and cannot, think for themselves.

7. I get it on Link TV too and watch Al Jazeera and Democracy Now! on it.
I also watch BBC news on BBC America, which is much better than what is offered on the other cable channels.

6. Banned in the USA?
It's not really a government ban, the mainstream cable companies refuse to carry the channel, even though the international version is not connected to the actual original Al Jazeera. MHz networks in DC carry the channel 24/7 in one of its subchannels.
