1. He claims:
"The (Air Force) Academy was tough for me because there's such a concentration on engineering and physics and chemistry, and my strengths lie in English and history and political science and law and government. And so I did well in terms of being on the dean's list every semester, but I struggled. It was hard. I had to work very, very hard. I was the freshman class council president, and so I assumed responsibility early while I was at the Academy. Because I did as well as I did, I was able to participate in a gliding program during one summer, so I learned how to fly gliders. I mean it was a great experience. "

15. And that's a big deep dark secret that the service academies
concentrate on engineering and the hard sciences? Missed that big sign over the door, Al?

I'm not so much interested in why he left the academy. I'd like to know how he got out from under his service commitment.

"By then Alberto Gonzales had gone farther than anyone in his family ever had. He'd graduated from high school, joined the Air Force, then won admission to the Air Force Academy.

After deciding he wasn't suited to a military career, Gonzales transferred to Rice University in Houston, before moving on to Harvard for law school."

Can you join and decide it's not for you?

4. Indeed. Got his education and political start then stiffed taxpayers?
Calling K.O. Calling K.O.

We need to get some attention on whether he weaseled out on military obligations.

Fucking chicken hawks.

12. He should've had the nerve to do what Poe did
to get himself thrown out of West Point: turned out stark naked for a drill. No dissembling there -- he made it clear he wanted out and didn't care about what people might think.
Now we've got all these gutless spineless fools who just get strings pulled on their behalf.

13. the question is less why he left and more why he didn't serve afterwards
At least I don't believe he served. If I'm wrong, sorry.

But I've seen it stated that by leaving after two years he avoided service commitments that kick in for those who attend the academy for more than 2 years. However, the current policy (and I don't know if was different when gonzo attended) imposes service commitments on all who attend the Academy. Specifically, a cadet who is "disenrolled" or resigns on or after the first day of academics in the fall semester of the second-class year currently incursa two-year commitment for active-duty service.

16. Uncle expected a return for that education
Either money reenbursement or AD service. Else some eager young space cadets would bail just short of the degree, finish it at another college and have a free degree with no strings.
