The dark areas are ocean peaking through the oil...

For a full sized image (very large) including surrounding area and ocean see: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=44375 (click on the image at the link to see the large version)

3. Indeed!
Edited on Wed Jun-23-10 06:16 PM by JuniperLea
We should be inundating our local news stations with calls and emails DEMANDING to see the truth!

The gulf... the seafloor... the devastated coastline... the dead animals... yes, even that...

We need to see the truth... everyone needs to see it! This is deadly serious! And far too many do not realize...

4. Geez, don't you think you're being too hard on poor BP?
I think somebody owes somebody an apology.

At least, that's the policy the Republicans plan to run on come November. They are more than welcome to do so, if you ask me.

11. Heartbreaking
The human tragedy is beyond words and I can only imagine what this is doing to animals, fish and other plant life. I honestly want to cry.

12. Actually, the oil is the silver gray ribbons. The gray of the ocean is not from the oil...
but, I believe, from the angle the photo was taken. Nowhere does NASA say that the dark spots are the "ocean peaking through". This is supported by observing the water color on the other side of the ocean breaks and also, more importantly, well up river (you can see better in the larger picture as this cuts out much of it). The color of the water in the rivers well upstream is the same color as the open ocean.
The spill is terrible, but lets keep to the facts. The overall gray is probably an affect of the imaging, not of the oil (except for the extensive silvery ribbons).

Go here and look at daily images, you'll see that the overall gray is not due to the oil and the ocean "peaks" through quite better than the picture above. http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/subsets/?subset=USA7.2010174

15. it is very clear it is not, if you look at previous images of the same site at different times...
even last year. the oil has traveled up stream in the rivers??
the oil is the ribbons you see in the picture, not the overall gray sheen.
