Oral sex 'linked to throat cancer'
Oral sex can raise the risk of throat cancer by transmitting a virus linked to the disease, scientists have claimed.

A new study shows that human papillomavirus (HPV) spread by the sex act can trigger a specific type of throat cancer in both men and women.

HPV infection through sexual intercourse is normally associated with cervical cancer. But researchers found that the virus is also a powerful risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the tonsils, tongue and throat.

This was especially true for people who had experienced oral sex with multiple partners. The study showed that having a history of HPV infection increased the chances of developing the cancer 32 times.

Previously smoking and drinking alcohol were considered the strongest risk factors for oropharyngeal cancer, which affects the tonsils, back of the tongue, and throat. But neither are any where near as hazardous as HPV infection, according to the new findings. Smoking raised the risk of throat cancer three times, and drinking 2.5....

1. Ten times more likely to cause throat cancer than smoking??
Edited on Thu May-10-07 02:03 PM by TahitiNut
Well ... better not allow this in restaurants, bars, or within 50' of a building entrance, then!!

:smoke:

... no more eating at the 'Y' I guess.

11. What part of "both men and women" didn't you understand?
Why was "Oral sex - performed on both men and women ..." not clear? Don't people read in that "medical lab"??

2. Not surprised.
It's called a CONDOM. Men would do themselves and their partners a world of good if they'd use them consistently unless they were trying to conceive a child.

5. Did you notice that it's about oral sex on EITHER males OR females?
Edited on Thu May-10-07 02:07 PM by TahitiNut
BOTH fellatio and cunnilingus are implicated.

(Never miss a chance to engage in male-bashing, though.) :eyes:

15. Yeah, dental dams would be a good idea, too
Edited on Thu May-10-07 02:39 PM by Warpy
even if it's a very minor means of transmission compared to fellatio.

By the way, what makes a suggestion that men protect themselves and their partners with condoms "male bashing?"

4. Just a general thought
Never EVER take a study seriously that says X increases the risk of Y by Z percent without above all knowing what that risk actually IS.

Buying 3 lottery tickets instead of one increases your "risk" of winning the Powerball by 300%.

I am not a smoker, never have been, hate the things. But I once got tired of all the relative risk claims and used raw data to show that a 50-yr smoker exchanged a 99.88% probability of NOT getting mouth cancer for a 99.68% chance by smoking. Relatively speaking that's huge - something over three times the risk. Practically speaking it means the difference between "fricking unlikely to get mouth cancer" and "damned unlikely to get mouth cancer".

I'm not going to repeat the attempt but I suspect the same applies here. Probably even more dramatically since unless I'm mistaken this is a rarer cancer.

I'm not encouraging people to smoke cavalierly, (although I am encouraging people to have oral sex cavalierly - esp if they are in my neck of the woods and need some no strings relief :))

18. They should offer badges to all those that have the vaccine
People could wear them whenever they're looking for action. They could say something catchy like, "sex with me is non-carcinogenic."
