Great video about single payer/universal healthcare, please spread it around!
http://www.grahamazon.com/sp/whatissinglepayer.php

Explains the concept very clearly. It needs to be seen by millions.

Tip o' the hat to DUer Bobbolink who first brought it to my attention. :toast:

2. So, I guess all other DUers have seen the video, and are ready for the quiz??
???

And, here I thought all this time that health care was a big concern for Dems?

Who knew?

Thanks, blondeatlast!! :yourock:

3. I support it, but the problem is Democrats who are nauseous at the idea of socialism as an answer
Give it up to the same guys who shot down the idea of single-payer health care back in 1992.

7. then your mission is clear
Explain to all your fellow Democrats that it has nothing to do with socialism.

No means of production are being privatized.

The non-productive parasites (by which I mean the corporations that control health insurance, not the people who work for them, of course) are being eliminated from the food chain. And the people who actually produce services will continue to profit from their own activities. It's the sort of thing that social democrats like. Socialists have other preferences.

Do you have companies that control access to schools by charging an administration fee for enrolling your kids? That control access to the roads by charging tolls every time you use one?

The analogies don't stand up well to scrutiny, I know -- but the idea of access to essential services being controlled for profit, it's still kinda understandable.

There is no "car purchase insurance" -- to cover the cost of a new car from a private dealership whenever you need one -- because nobody would buy it. People can save up for cars, or buy them on credit, or do without. And the cost of the insurance would be prohibitive.

People really can't save up for health care, or buy it on credit, or do without it. And the cost of insurance is in fact prohibitive.

Think of single public payer health insurance as being like school vouchers, if that helps. Everybody gets to pick their own provider, and everybody pays the cost.

Unlike school vouchers, single public payer health insurance isn't going to result in quacks and scoundrels setting up shop at public expense, of course. The public already regulates the professions who would receive the vouchers.

And, unlike parallel public/private school systems, there isn't going to be one system supported by taxes and another system supported by vouchers. It will be all vouchers, all the time -- you get to choose your own providers, you get the voucher to pay for whatever service you genuinely need.

13. PLUS--add the comparison with fire departments!
Would you like to dial 911 with your house going up in smoke, only to be quizzed if your insurance is paid up, and if you have an "existing" fire condition?

Funny how we accept "socialism" with our fire and police protection, but not health care....?

I like your "assignment"! :hi: :bounce:  :hi: :bounce:

20. that's a much better one

My tired brain wasn't doing well at analogies just then. ;)

Yours is an excellent one: imagine if having your fire treated, i.e. extinguished, required insurance.

17. No "car purchase insurance", but at least $2,000 of cost of new car
is health care costs!

Hidden taxes in what we purchase is directly caused by the company's health insurance costs, passed on to consumers.

What do we think of that noise? Something for the "high taxes" arguments?

11. Thanks. I honestly did not know how it worked.
I think we need a few more videos like this. Things are way too complicated for SOME of us (wink) to understand.

And while we're at it, what would be wrong with Calculus for kids. A math channel. A physics channel. But I've digressed.

Sorry, I just clicked the link on her post, and only read the subject line before I watched the video and then posted it on my blog, link in sig line.

Also, you know what, I never really looked to see if I have a hitcounter on my blog, only a couple of comments, at least one from a fellow DUer.
