Do we need to send Skinner more money? I am perfectly willing to do that. This sluggishness is getting old. And I keep getting kicked off! I type a reply, click "post message" and then I have no DU!!

I have been patient all week but am getting tired of it. Is this a more serious problem than they are willing to tell us? Is someone hacking the website?

8. They've Communicated Otherwise Since, And Will Need Some Downtime During Off Peak Hours To Rectify

the issue. It appears they have a lot of archiving to do which will take a lot of time, so they are going to perform the maintenance during off peak night hours this weekend I think.

It is a bit frustrating, but we're all a family here and will get through these tough times together. :hug:

I hear ya though. I'd kick in money too if they need an emergency funding drive to replace equipment asap. Since they haven't asked for it though, I think they may know they don't need it but just need the time to be able to archive/compact whatever they need to in order to get the database functioning properly again.

4. me too three times today i looked stuff up and did a great post and wammy..du was gone

i give up..i wouldn't redo it..who has the time for that..or patients..

i just went to another site to read and post..

then you go to post here..and it is so sluggish you don't know if your post went through and next thing you know..it posted 4 times..
then you have to go clean it up..

what gives??

9. DU runs on multiple servers.

It ain't just one box. To get everything to run well together, especially when there are intermittent problems, is tough. Sometimes, it is one configuration line that is off by a hair, sometimes it's a part in a server or a load balancer that has an intermittent fault...sometimes the problem just dissapears and you don't know why and it doesn't happen again. Those are the ones that really nag at you.

You can be sure that many hours have been spent, behind the scenes, in some noisy, cold, drafty and totally unappealing colo center, trying to get the problems to go away. You can also bet that many more hours will be spent just the same way, until the problem is fixed. Fueled by crap takeout food, lots of coffee and too little sleep. For such can be the lot of the geek.
