2. as I recall, Tempe is NOT a hotbed of liberal activism
If folks are street blogging there, no wonder cheney is on a bird farm, mooning Iran. Things are getting hot for the junta

16. University where up and coming republicans go to learn how to game the system
in my observation.

The liberals gravitate toward U of A in Tucson ;)

19. well if yer gonna go and compare it to Tucson...
:hippie:

Still, Tempe (especially the older parts) is more progressive than most of the valley.

22. Boy, you sure got that right.
Trying to motivate students to vote here is like pulling teeth from a hippo, and probably just as much fun.

Even the ones who identify themselves as "liberals" are, sadly, very poor at explaining why they are liberals, and fall back on demagogues like Michael Moore instead of thinking things through for themselves.

I distinctly recall on Election Day 2006, a friend of mine called me up, literally to ask me how to vote on various propositions.

"What's this Proposition mean? How should I vote?"

"Well, if you read it, it talks about property taxes and schools - you pretty much have to decide whether you want lower taxes or schools with more funding."

"Oh, ok. What about this one?"

:wtf:

Most people here, sadly, are intellectually lazy. They'd rather rely on someone else's talking points than look up facts and information for themselves.

PS - I've been to 12 countries and about 30 US states (including Utah), and the only place in the world people hassled me for having long hair was Tempe, Arizona.

7. Tempe Red? Hardly
It's one of the few progressive areas in Az. Former mayor Neil Giuliano was elected 4 times and was openly gay, He was also President of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Tempe is almost all ASU students and workers.

I guess it's time for me to join classmates.com. My 20-year is this summer.

Did anyone else in this thread grow up in Tempe?
