Three US firms recall beef
By Ben Wasserman-foodconsumer.org
May 12, 2007

A Michigan firm is voluntarily recalling about 129,000 pounds of beef products due to possible contamination with E coli, according to a statement issued Friday by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The beef products produced between March 1 and April 30 by Davis Creek Meats and Seafood, based out of Kalamazoo, Michigan, were shipped to foodservice distribution centers and Marketplace stores in Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The problem was discovered by Michigan Department of Community Health as part of an ongoing E coli illness investigation.

4. There's nothing new about voluntary recalls. When the USDA FSIS
finds contaminated meat, IIRC they can tell the producer to recall it but cannot force the issue, only fine them.

USDA people in the trenches hate that their hands are tied and they can't do more. But the laws are written to favor corporate profits, not consumer safety.

2. Damn it all. Chicken, fish, beef, pork, veggies contaminated
recently. The way the FDA has been gutted should be classified as a criminal act. This is what happens when mega corporations take control and when the government enables them. The food supply in this country is unsafe - its a breakdown of the system.

I'm scared to go grocery shopping anymore, we are playing russian roulette with groceries now.

5. FDA is not in charge of meats. USDA FSIS is.

7. Thanks Kestrel. I was thinking of the pet food episode when I mentioned the FDA
and didn't make that clear.

6. These people should hire Al Gonzales so they don't have to do this.
After all, Abu Gonzo is the nation's foremost expert in avoiding recall. "Beef? I don't recall!"

8. You would think it would be less expensive
To have the meat or at least the areas the animals were kept in or the plants inspected than to raise all the cattle , use all the resources to do this , kill the cattle for nothing and then end up either making people ill and tossing out 129,000 pounds of beef , seems like such a waste that could have been avoided .
