BAGHDAD - The total number of American troops killed in Iraq rose to at least 3,390 on Saturday following a bloody clash south of Baghdad, according to an AFP tally of figures released by the US military. snip

So far this month 39 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq, an average of almost four per day.

If casualties continue to mount at that rate May could become one of the bloodiest for American forces since the US-led invasion of March 2003.
