In Vancouver, life has dealt harshly with 36-year-old Desirae Jones in the three years since her Army captain husband, Bryan Jones, 34, a strong military leader, suffered massive brain injuries in a parachute accident while training to ship out for Iraq.
He remains in a locked Troutdale, Ore., care home. His ability to take care of himself was wiped away by a blow to the head and the surgery meant to save his live. He is occasionally aggressive and prone to wandering if he isn’t locked away. He can’t be a capable husband and father. When he goes out in public, he touches strangers, causing alarm. He is too rough with his son. He is incontinent. Once a toned fighting man, he has gained 100 pounds because he’s lost the ability to know when he’s had enough to eat.
The VA pays Bryan Jones’ medical expenses and has given his family a hefty financial boost with grants totaling $6,564 a month, tax free.
But the VA also has added to the wife’s burden by unexpectedly demanding an audit of two years’ expenses, delivering to her a miserable spring filled with sleepless nights, dozens of confusing phone conversations with bureaucrats and reams of paperwork.
