20. I was not defending it, just pointing out where the mentality comes from.
Also I believe that most of the Western Germans who were born after WWII did take English classes as a second language in school just like most of the Japanese kids did. And the Eastern Germans took Russian as a second language.

34. That comment reminds me of something a Japanese acquaintance told me
Edited on Mon May-14-07 07:17 AM by Art_from_Ark
He said that during the days of GHQ (US occupation of Japan), General MacArthur had wanted to replace the complicated native writing system with a romanized writing system, like what had been in Turkey by Kemel Ataturk. The rationale was that the Japanese citizens were easily persuaded to support the war because they couldn't read the newspapers! The only problem with that logic was that most Japanese at the time were literate, and all newspapers were controlled by the government.

17. Reminds me of the (hopefully true) quote of Texas governor Ma Ferguson
Edited on Sun May-13-07 11:05 PM by jobycom
Who, over teaching foreign languages in Texas schools, "If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for the children of Texas."

She wasn't all bad, though. She was a fierce opponent of the KKK and prohibition, and was considered a populist.

23. Whats even funnier is that in 1940 if republicans had their way we all would be reading and
speaking German. Remember the pukes thought the world of Germany's leader, Hitler. In fact they ignore the fact that FDR only declared war on Japan, it was Germany that declared war on the US. Remember in 1939 it was neo nazi's that ruled today its neo con's, same people different name. But facts and history mean little to pukes, after all that was in the past and they live in today. Yet every puke new and improved ideals came from Herbert Hoover and we are seeing a repeat of what Hoover's ideals caused the first time around. The old money rich families make a bundle, some new money families are getting trickled on and the rest of the country sinks farther down the ladder out of work. Funny thing about that is by the end of the day it will only be old money that comes out ahead as most of the new rich will get taken to the cleaners. If it wasn't for what harm its going to cost the workers and poor in this country, I'd be glad to see these puking pukes pukes taken down.

By the way, the colonists almost chose German as the language for the colonies. Lots of Mennonites and Amish in Pennsylvania.
