Also I believe that most of the Western Germans who were born after WWII did take English classes as a second language in school just like most of the Japanese kids did. And the Eastern Germans took Russian as a second language.

He said that during the days of GHQ (US occupation of Japan), General MacArthur had wanted to replace the complicated native writing system with a romanized writing system, like what had been in Turkey by Kemel Ataturk. Funny thing about that is by the end of the day it will only be old money that comes out ahead as most of the new rich will get taken to the cleaners.
