The Pope presents a dualistic message in Brazil

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6652661.stm

--snip--

My mind suddenly went back 23 years to that blazing hot day in Rome when I had covered the story of the summoning to the Vatican of Leonardo Boff, one of the Brazilian founding fathers of Liberation Theology.

He met with the press in Saint Peter's Square, moments after he had been summarily sacked and told to recant, when he came before a one-man church tribunal consisting of the then head of the Holy Office, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

The sentence, from which there was no appeal, was for having written a book considered subversive and dangerous to the faithful.

Boff was branded a dangerous Marxist, and his explanation why Christians should be politically and socially active and involved in bringing about real salvation from oppressors in this world rather than await possible salvation in the next, was rejected out of hand by the icy theological professor.

2. Pope Ratzinger is, like, a republicon.

3. I'm convinced Benedict has become the front man for the conservative movement
If there was any doubt, the threats he made last week toward pro-choice politicians convinced me. I also think it's significant that Benedict has very little to say about Iraq when his predecessor told Bush, "If you go to Iraq, you go without God."

5. Ratzinger's writings have been the basis for the reactionaries
who have been promoting this anti-Muslim Crusade disguised as a liberation. Just like Junior, he presents a face of plausible denial and speaking out against the violence, while behind the scenes, his henchmen agitate and promote the very violence he appears to warn against.

6. Formercia, you got links? I'm trying to keep track of fascist activity in Latin America.
1. On anti-Muslim Crusade issue. 2. On connection to rightwing paramiliaries, and who "his henchmen" are. The one I know most about is Cardinal Lara in Venezuela. (Rightwing fanatic--spent his career in Vatican finance, fired in the fascist banking scandals of the '80s (the Vatican never fires anybody), and spouts Bush/corporate predator line on Hugo Chavez.)

8. Right
He is very careful who he criticizes. Does not want to alienate the conservatives in power.
