Just watched a sensational new series of Sherlock Holmes, on BBC1 TV, updated to the |
|
present day, and seemingly not based on original stories by Conan Doyle. It's a three-parter, but I think it will be extended to many more instalments.
It's just called, Sherlock; which presented a problem for me at first, as I'm so used to you lot saying, "No shit, Sherlock!", whenever I heard him addressed by name, a part of me was taking it as sarcasm!
A reviewer, Sophie Heath of the Daily Mail Weekend, described it as "quirky, daring, darkly funny and suerbly acted, this is the surprise of the year (so far). Watch out for it.

1. A detective named Sherlock Holmes... |
|
That's not based on Arthur Conan Doyle's original..
That is one amazing coincidence.

that the programs were not dramatizations of ACD's original tales, like the Jeremy Brett programs were, but instead are original mysteries.

7. There are lots of Holmes stories that were not written by AC Doyle.. |
|
But they are most certainly based on Doyle's work. Here are a selection of such available for free online reading that I found pretty engaging.. http://www.webscription.net/10.1125/Baen/F1597801607/F1597801607.htm

10. Thanks, but I've already got a bunch to wade through |
|
Right now, I'm reading Shadows Over Baker Street, an anthology of short stories combining the worlds of Sherlock Holmes and H. P. Lovecraft.

18. Several of the stories I linked to are in that vein.. |
|
The first one is particularly so, Lovecraft and Doyle..
And another one combines Doyle's "Lost World" genre with his "Holmes" genre in a rather odd way.

2. We have BBC which shows reruns and orginals of Doctor Who |
|
and a lot of other original English shows. What times does it come one I don't watch BBC regularly but we might have it. I live in the Central time zone.

15. It was Cumberpatch. And very good he is too. Oddly enough, he looks quite like |

i just read that you muse that the new series is seemingly not based on the original series? have you read them might i ask? the first instalment is called "a study in pink" ? the first sherlock holmes account by conan doyle is "a study in scarlet" and having just watched it myself i would say they were sticking extremely close for the most part. perhaps the next instalments you mean? i'm not certain what they will be about.
i personally think cumberbatch's holmes is fantastic so far, would you agree?

16. Absolutely! I think it will be a sensation, as TV series go. I'm probably just plain |
|
wrong about them not being based on his stories. I did read many of them fifty odd years ago, but don't remember much about them. I also re-read a few in a library book some months ago.

14. I thought Jeremy Brett's Holmes was outstanding |
|
but there is nothing wrong with new interpretations of the character, such as the one we saw recently by Robert Downey Jr.
The same holds for the Doctor Who series. Who doesn't love the new Doctor?
I am looking forward to seeing this new version of Holmes.

17. For a long time I thought Jeremy Brett's interpretation was way, way over-the-top, |
|
but having recently re-read a few of the stories, I see it wasn't so much at all. Well, he does ham it up, sometimes to the point of high camp, but most of it seems true to the book.

19. Do you remember a very young Jeremy Brett in My Fair Lady? |
|
He played Freddy, Audrey Hepburn's love struck boyfriend. Someone else sang the song for him, much as Marnie Nixon sang Hepburn's parts.
