al-Qaida: Stop Search for U.S. Soldiers
Published: 5/14/07, 12:05 PM EDT
By THOMAS WAGNER
BAGHDAD (AP) - An al-Qaida front group that claims it has captured American soldiers warned the United States on Monday to stop searching for them and suggested it attacked the U.S. convoy as revenge for the rape and murder of a local teenager last year.

The U.S. military also said for the first time it believes the three missing soldiers were abducted by al-Qaida-linked militants after an attack that included three roadside bombs.

"What you are doing in searching for your soldiers will lead to nothing but exhaustion and headaches. Your soldiers are in our hands. If you want their safety, do not look for them," the Islamic State of Iraq said on a militant Web site.

"You should remember what you have done to our sister Abeer in the same area," the statement said, referring to five American soldiers who were charged in the rape and killing of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi and the killings of her parents and her younger sister last year."

1. Only a matter of time before they start outfitting them with GPS chips
if they haven't already. Frankly, if there was a way you could carry it, and maybe swallow it when captured, I'd be in favor of that. I'd not like one that's embedded under the skin--that would only guarantee that the baaastids cut it out if they knew about it.

3. I was thinking about that yesterday.
There's got to be some way to keep track of our soldiers. I'm not so sure if embedded chips aren't the way to go, though. If it was done in their clothing or equipment, it wouldn't be as reliable to track.

13. I suspect installing GPS chips would only assure instant death
The enemy adapts quickly, and I suspect it wouldn't take long for them to discover the liability of maintaining living prisoners.

17. Well, then you'd have to get 'doubly sneaky'--issue two of them.
The prisoner hands one over, and swallows the other one...

You've gotta figure they've at least THOUGHT about it. If not under the skin, in the heel of a boot, or integrated into vests or helmets, or even as an adjunct to the dogtags....

21. The other obstacle would be
if the enemy ever found out how to track our soldiers through their GPS. It would ruin what little element of surprise remains with troop movements.

4. What damnation hath he wrought on the rest of our troops?
There will be reprisals for Abeer's rape/murder for as long as we are there, if not longer.

5. I want it to go back to whomever signed him up. They KNEW he had serious problems
Edited on Mon May-14-07 11:59 AM by uppityperson
and still they signed him up. And those who trained him that also knew he had serious issues. And on and on.

There will be reprisals for a long time.

Korb said that such policies have allowed an autistic man to be signed up to be a cavalry scout, as well as Private Steven Green, the soldier arrested for his alleged role in the rape of an Iraqi girl and the murder of her family. Green was allowed to enlist despite having legal, educational, and psychological problems.

18. That's a shitload of people....for starters....
The recruiter who contacted him, chatted him up, did his paperwork, sent off for his background check, scheduled his ASVAB, took him to the test, took him to MEPS for his physical, and placed him in his job speciality--these could each and every one, be a DIFFERENT person.

Then, there's the doctors who examined him--eye doctors, audiologists, dentists, general practitioners, and the one who does the "Do you ever see things that aren't there" interview. These exams take place in the MEPS on induction, again when he shipped out, and in the boot camp.

There's the officer(s) who swore him in, too--once when he entered DEP, again when he went active to boot camp.

Then, there's his instructors at boot camp--the drill sergeant, the teachers for his physical training and classroom work....the ones who put his record together, to include that BACKGROUND CHECK that apparently didn't happen...

Who do you single out? It's a HUGE chain, and all along the chain, there are people who SHOULD HAVE KNOWN.

This is what happens when the Pentagon gives a nudge and a wink and says "Lower The Standards." Of course, if you dare to SAY that the standards have been lowered, substantially, then those on ACDU take it as a personal insult, as though one is suggesting that THEY somehow were in that category.

19. The system, get all of them.
I know it is a huge chain and there are many people who should have known. I'd like to see his exams, physical and psych tests and I know. Not single out any 1 person, but the whole system.

10. That article is really something. Any pro-occupation folks should meet Abeer's family
I feel so, for these soldiers, their families and friends. I cannot express my anger and sadness at the continuation of this occupation and wish anyone in favor of continuing it meet with the remaining family of Abeer (her brothers and uncle).

11. it isn't fucking "al-qaeda in Iraq" for fucks sakes
these are Sunni guerrilla groups. Home grown anti-occupation forces.

<snip>

The Islamic State of Iraq (a guerrilla group) claimed to have been behind the ambush of two humvees full of US soldiers, which killed 5 of them and a translator. Three troops remain unaccounted for. US military personnel are systematically searching houses in Mahmudiya and elsewhere, which will have the unfortunate effect of further alienating the local population.
