My friend is a "Coward."
Recently I spoke with my Bush/Iraq War supporting friend regarding an alarmist email he sent me about the mortal threat the USA and its citizens face from terrorists, and particularly from Al Qaeda in Iraq. The email compared Al Qaeda/Saddam, et al to Hitler. I asked him if he believed in the cause so fervently, why he had not enlisted in the military. He is 34. Or was he preparing his son to enter the military to protect the USA and his family's lives? My friend told me point blank that he was a coward and that he would not want his son involved with anything like Iraq. How convenient. I wonder if he truly believes in the cause. What is wrong with people?

1. He's no fool--he's one of those 'entitled' republicans...they think war is like cleaning toilets, a
job for the 'lower classes' to do.

2. Simple Neocon 101
It's okay for others to do the fighting and dying. Think about it -- look at their role models. Bush, Cheney, Wolfowitz, etc., all chickenhawks.

4. At least he was honest about being a coward.
I respect that more than those who come up with weak excuses for why they can't go.

8. Anybody remember Mel Gibson's "The Patriot?"
In one early scene, his character was urged to support the revolution by supporting the sending of troops to join thed continental Army. He replied that he would not fight, and because he wouldn't fight, he wouldn't ask anyone else to fight in his stead. Good thing for those who support this war but won't fight to remember.

11. He's a coward plain and simple.
He believes his family and country are facing a mortal threat.
And all he wants to do is cheerlead.

14. Obviously he does not really fear this threat
I have been told by family members how it was when Mussolini's men came into their village, looking for men and boys to cart off to war. I have been told by family members how they felt when they enlisted after Pearl Harbor, and why they did so. If this guy honestly, truly, and really thought this enemy has the same capacity for destruction and madness as Hitler, et al, he'd be in the recruiting office in a second.

If I truly felt my way of life, my freedom to do as I will, to believe as I wished, and the freedom to change those beliefs when I found a set better-suited to me, were honestly threatened by military force, shit, I'd sign up myself. But we are not in that danger. I know it, you know it, and your friend knows it. Otherwise, he'd be part of the military solution. Instead, he hits the "forward" button and angers a friend.

15. My neighbor is too, he said he won't enlist til they put 2 million troops on the ground over there
and "get the job done right". He also says he doesn't want to be a political pawn for the President and Nancy Pelosi to play with.

Not sure how to approach him because even though he is a hawk, he has two brothers in Germany and Baghdad, so he does have some "family" skin in the game so to speak.
