48 Officers Intentionally Killed in 2006
"Published: 5/14/07, 5:46 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) - Forty-eight police officers were intentionally killed in the line of duty last year, the FBI said Monday.

Forty-six were shot and killed and two were struck by vehicles. The 48 officers intentionally killed were among 114 who died in the line of duty. Both numbers were down slightly from last year.

Handguns accounted for 35 of the fatal shootings. Eight officers were killed with rifles, two with shotguns and one with an unknown type of firearm, the FBI said in its preliminary report. A final version will be released this fall.

Of the 66 officers who died accidentally, 38 died in car accidents, 11 were hit by vehicles, eight died in motorcycle accidents, four died in accidental shootings, three were killed in aircraft accidents and two died in bicycle accidents, the FBI said."

4. You welcome and amongst you and me
I'm not surprsied, Americans tend to be extremely ambivalent about their police officers

Most are good people doing a thankless job...

5. It's not a dangerous job, statistically
The deaths are tragic, and I salute those that gave their lives. That said, 114 nationwide in a year is a small number. Police officer is not among the most hazardous occupations in this country.

The problem is we are given the impression it is more dangerous than it is, often to give cover to police that have been accused of brutality or being trigger happy.

6. It would be interesting to get a comparison on occupational hazard
How many convenience store clerks or other retail employees were intentionally killed last year?

How many truck drivers died?

Miners?

Farm workers?

I found this on Google

You have to wonder about Alaskans. This kind of stuff explains a lot about Mike Gravel.

It is a thankless and hazardous job, despite some comments here.

The other jobs mentioned may be hazardous as well, that in and of itself does not negate the fact that most law enforcement jobs are hazardous. (I'm not aware of other jobs that require the wearing of bullet proof vests.)

12. Been there, worn the uniform
and the star and felt the indifference -- have family on the force.

Wasn't until 9/11 did folks realize how important cops and firefighters are, then they would stop and thank the cops and first responders. But like that feeling of unity and patriotism, the feelings of appreciate wore off and now they are ignored or hated. I blame this admin for fostering the "us against them" mentality - the "good v. evil" -- and for cutting funds needed to the departments.

8. 2 of those cops
were killed a short distances from me. Wife called into 911 because her husband was beating her up. When both the deputies got out of the patrol car the husband opened fire and killed both of them. One had his girlfriend riding in the car, the other had a local journalist who witness the whole thing

Today we have a missing officer, went to a call and he's missing. Patrol car found set on fire and lots of blood was found at the original call. Doesn't look good.

Lots of people can put down this occupation but most have never rode with these people when they have to go to calls. Violent world out there, sometimes.

10. I hope they find your missing officer safe. I hate hearing this.
Honestly, I think our military, police officers, firemen, nurses and teachers should be getting the huge salaries that our "professional" athletes make. That's part of why I boycott professional sports. Those guys just make wayyyyyyyyy too much money to catch, throw or run with a freaking ball. And our children look up to these athletes as heroes and role models. I find that laughable sometimes......
